RecImg (the tool to make a custom ‘refresh’ or ‘recovery’ Windows image) really only images the C drive (or likely the Windows drive), minus such root folders it does not recognise, and minus a few things it does not include on purpose. The promise to back up one’s applications does not hold beyond the usual ‘Program Files’ on the Windows partition. (Not a negative, really, but it’s good to know.) On the other hand, RecImg will happily stuff your hiberfil.sys in the image too, so it seems a good idea to disable hibernation before imaging. #windows   #backup

Gmail promotes some really bad habits: not only sending enormous histories back and forth, but forwarding full histories to people who should have never seen them; and if you don’t play along, your messages get buried and easily overlooked. It also makes harder keeping subjects to actual subjects; or it nulls distinction between ‘to’ and ‘cc’… Not happy about it.

So I thought I would give a try to this Laplink PCmover Express for Windows XP, advertised by Microsoft to Windows XP users, to transfer to my newer Windows setup some application settings. Application settings transfer is one of its advertised features.

I ran the tool. And when I saw what it listed as it was gonna do—it was about to just copy nearly every folder from the old machine to the new one, just like that, unless I manually deselected some—I said, “Holy Guacamole, no way are you gonna mess up my new Windows installation like that,” and cancelled the shit.

What the economy of scale does when most people go for the cheap bottom:
“… a world where you can buy a crap netbook with ad-supported apps and a version of Windows for $50, but buying a high-end laptop or desktop suitable for real content creation might set you back $5,000-10,000, plus another $500 if you're hellbent on buying a retail copy of Windows that gives YOU the admin rights instead of your ISP, cable company, employer, or some other entity, and another $250 for the UEFI bios subsidy unlock code if you want to install Linux. That's the direction we're heading in.”

I’ve seen much improvement in my smartphone’s ability to connect and stay connected to my home Wi-Fi after I gave the phone a static local IP…
