“I am what I create today and tomorrow, I was what I made yesterday.”
Marco van Zomeren (2012)
Who is Marco van Zomeren?
Marco van Zomeren began to translate his creativity to paper from the moment he could handle a pencil. From then on, drawing has always been central to his life. To exploit his creative skills, he went to the Grafisch Lyceum in Rotterdam. The school ensured that Marco fell in love with the graphic design field and that a lot of practical knowledge was imparted. With succes he graduated in 2008. To further explore his creativity and his own identity as a graphic designer, Marco decided to study further at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam. Here he studied graphic design for another four years. With succes he graduated in 2012. After these studies, he became ready to rise above his known capacities.
“Graphic design ain’t two-dimensional!”
His vision on graphic design consists of two main principles:
1. Graphic design incorporates multiple dimensions.
While printed matter is to be interpreted as a two-dimensional surface, there are several layers located within it. These merged layers transmit the message that has to be communicated. This manifests itself through a direct and indirect level. “The quest to pull it off that these levels are present in balance, is seen by me as the biggest challenge of graphic design. It’s allways exciting to search for a fusion between a form and its narrative function.”
2. The final product should be carefully transferred.
Both parties, the client and the graphic designer, should feel comfortable with the final product. Therefore the made choices should be clear and confirmed. This ensures that not only the designer, but also the employer and his employees can understand the design, so they’re also able to justify it. “I am always looking for a solid base to work with, a base for myself, but at the same time for the customer. A design is successful when everyone is aware of what it represents. When this is accomplished, the design remains strong at all times.”
The intended result is a unique contribution which forms the link with the audience. As a graphic designer Marco van Zomeren thus acts as a mediator. His method goes beyond ‘making a composition’. It goes further than what can be observed with the naked eye. It’s always part of a larger whole which you can experience: graphic design ain’t two-dimensional!
