"That any schoolkid could predict waving dead chickens and eliminating feedback and consequences will lead to a series of disastrously poor choices by speculators and imprudent borrowers doesn't register with the Keynesian Cargo Cult. But since the Keynesian Cargo Cult is headed by a Nobel Prize academic economist, the Cargo Cult members effusively praise the Emperor's fine (and nonexistent) robe."

interesting chart, would be great to have a stacked chart of total GDP next to it though

Interesting chart: How the regional share of the global economy changed over the past two centuries:

Paradox? I don't think so! A real bank run every few years could really strengthen an economy. Not like the care free model we have today, which is bound to end in disaster sooner or later....

“The right of self-determination in regard to the question of membership in a state thus means: whenever the inhabitants of a particular territory, whether it be a single village, a whole district, or a series of adjacent districts, make it known, by a freely conducted plebiscite, that they no longer wish to remain united to the state to which they belong at the time, but wish either to form an independent, state or to attach themselves to some other state, they wishes are to be respected and complied with. This is the only feasible and effective way of preventing revolutions and civil and international wars.”

Great development! Healthy competition among smaller entities is much more likely to produce positive results than top down regulation and regional cross subsidies!

Of course people have to be willing to start fresh and not constantly weigh up different aspects of history. Too often do I hear Germans talk about Bavaria only enjoying its current prosperity because of regional subsidies 20-30 years ago. Similar arguments can be heard in the Catalonia debate. According to some Spaniards from other regions, Catalonia received financial support for many years. Now that they are the economic engine of the Iberian peninsula, it should be their turn to finance the other regions....

Binding people together like this in some form of Sittenhaft is counter productive. Especially so, when viewed through the eyes of generations that should look into the future and develop their own identity and opportunities. They should not have to fight over decisions made by politicians their parents and grand parents voted for decades ago!

Unwinding decades of centralization top down will be difficult, but there is hope for the EU to provide a lean framework for regional cooperation.

Introduction
I spent the last 12 years moving forth and back between Europe and the US, first studying and then working six years for Google.

In early 2011 I decided it was time to explore some other corners of the world. So in July, I left my job, moved out of my apartment and reduced my belongings to a back pack and some GBs in the digital cloud. After Latin America, and a few weeks in the US, I am ready for Asia!
