The Euler Line

Euler discovered that three kinds of centers, in any triangle, always fall on the same line. There's no intuitive reason that they should do so. It's one of the coolest discoveries of geometry, and the Greeks missed it! See also:

Photo usage without permission.... this happens to me quite a bit although not in music industry and most of the time I end up not collecting any fees. I do get many nasty emails from people using my images on websites and now even in games on iTunes. I am now considering taking all of my social images offline.

How a video can change life's…
2 years ago I produced a short video called "Models Are Made". Looking back, it's astounding to see what happened since, where this little clip has gone, and what it has achieved.

How often do we photographers create something that saves a life? What we produce is pretty, colourful, sometimes sells products or a great location, tells a story and shows the beautiful, interesting and sometimes ugly sides of this world. This is important, don't get me wrong, and I love it, but we also have to be honest: We are not curing cancer.

"Models are made" has done something I could have never imagined, hoped or dreamed of: It actually changed life's. What counts is not the 82 countries in which the video has been watched, or the nearly 90 thousand times it has been viewed on YouTube. It is the few individuals the video has touched and in a few cases has changed. The vast majority of viewers understands the trickery behind advertising, retouching etc, especially in the western world. For a few viewers however, this video has had a huge impact on them, and the emails I received from mothers and young girls, telling their story and what it meant to them, is beyond believe.

A mother of a 15 year old daughter wrote (from a spanish translation): " My daughter suffers from eating disorder, she doesn't eat because she believes she will never be as skinny as the models she adores in magazines. We have great concerns, she has been in the hospital already. After watching your video, she went into the kitchen and made herself a sandwich. This has never happened before. Your video has given her a new view on life ".

If this one email would have been the only response to the video, I'd be happy and all the effort was worth it. Over the last two years however, many similar emails and letters have arrived, and I cannot express how proud this makes me. Schools in several countries have asked for the clip on DVD, and they show it now as part of their curriculum to all of their students. Incredible.

It all started small with a conversation during makeup for a fashion shoot. Our 4 models shared their stories of girls they know who have eating disorders, trying to be "as perfect" as the girls in advertising, stories from school, uni, friends and family. It all was quite shocking to hear, not just as a photographer, but also as a dad of two young girls myself. I felt I had to do "something," never in a million years expecting much of an outcome.

Looking back, I feel we have indeed achieved something.

It goes to show that even small ideas and a little initiative can have a much bigger impact than we would ever anticipate. We have to brush of the fact that — for most — a video like this will be old coffee, and most will disregard it. We might even get some nasty comments like "how stupid, everybody knows that". Trust me, I received my fair share of those comments and emails as well, and I'll be honest, some of them hurt. Sometimes however we are not meant to please the majority, but to talk to the few who need it. I am glad we have done that.

Incredible sequence of the Lunar Eclipse from SmugMug Pro +Mike Mezeul for his series "Looking Up" by Mike Mezeul II

Mike talks about the making of this image.

"You've seen the lunar eclipse up close by now, so how about the lunar eclipse over an amazing field of bluebonnets in Ennis, Texas? I stayed out til 6am in morning photographing the different phases of the eclipse over this field on Mach Road, and composited them to create this image."

Check out more from Mike on his SmugMug site.
