This post is for new and old players alike. I see a lot of people in a lot of posts and threads complaining about "defense". How defense needs to be buffed, how it needs to be looked at, how there needs to be defensive options. If you want to have sustained fun in this game, you need to adjust your thinking around this very important idea:
Attacking is defending. Defending is attacking.
There is no defense. Just two forms of offense.
Pick whichever is more palatable to you.
Defense in this game as it is envisioned by many players patently doesn't exist. There are only tactics and mods than can be used to dissuade or inconvenience an attacker, but there's no actual defense. And the game is not designed to have any.
Instead, it is designed around two forms of offense. The first form is building. You build, you link, you field. With the current regional scoring system, there is a major motivation for fielding; every week, the scores get tallied and one side definitively wins or loses. The only way to gain points is to field. In almost every game, when you score points against the other team, that is considered an offensive move. The same goes for this one. Fielding is offensive gameplay.
Blowing up enemy portals and dropping their fields is defensive. You're preventing your enemy team from scoring or eroding their chances of victory through direct action, though no points are scored for your side. I have news for you; if you're out there blowing stuff up, you're not attacking. You're defending. It only feels like attacking because it's a violent, destructive action. But in pure game mechanic sense, you're defending.
The game is balanced. Just as easy as it is for just about any player to drop just about any field, so is it just as effective for a single player to throw a final link to complete a massive field that sends their team into the lead. Considering that MU scores in my cell alone range in the hundreds of thousands, I think its safe to say that fielding is not something we struggle with.
This idea that portals are property that can be individually defended from attack is a fallacy and clinging to that notion will erode your fun. Ingress is a game about mindset. It's a game about understanding and adapting the correct philosophy behind how you intend to play; finding a niche, filling it, and contributing to your local community. It is not a game of skill. It's a game of planning, time investment, and patience.
Tl;Dr - Defense as it is generally thought to exist in this game, doesn't. Don't let shields, turrets and force amps fool you. those aren't meant to stop an 'attack', they're just there to slow down and inconvenience an opponent. Fielding is how you attack. Blowing up portals is how you defend. Portals themselves cannot be, and shouldn't be, individually cherished or defended. That's not their function and a lot of people's frustrations come from this fallacy.
