A few days ago I had to fhelp somebody open their door because the bolt broke while it was extended. It's interesting because somebody fixed a shattered plate with rivets, and it worked for decades. This Russwin case was made of iron so I'm not sure why they didn't just weld it back together but the fix worked and the results speak for themselves.

Don't let some schmuck drill your lock out, and especially don't pay $400 for it. That's what happened to this poor woman. I would've charged $100 total to unlock this, tax already included. I guarantee that I could have unlocked this without drilling it, too.

Another day, another story about some electronic security device that can be opened using freely available software. If you put a computer in it, people can reverse engineer it and release the software to defeat it.

Here's how to fix a Baldwin thumblatch when it stops working from the outside. It's because the gears have broken off inside the lock. This video instructs how to rotate the gear so that the lock will work again.

If you use computers for security, you'd better have a way to roll out updates to those computers (that is secure). When they put computers into cars they started an arms race. Keep your eye on this to find out when your car model's wireless security has been compromised!

Did some work today at a building full of doozies...can you see what is wrong with all of them? We have a wrap around plate that is too small for the door, another that is for two locks instead of one (so we know the installer was aware they make one suited more for his purpose), a piece of plastic holding a lock cylinder in, a deadbolt mortised 1/2 inch in even though it is adjustable to that same backset, a strike plate installed over a bolt, and a lock glued onto a door.
