Rug restoration scissors – actually embroidery scissors made by the Germen company Engles. Restorers working with the same tools often tie small bits of yarn on their scissors to identify them.

We clean handmade wool rugs with water and detergent; a lot of water and very little detergent. Much of the actual cleaning action is mechanical. The force of pressurized water – nature’s most natural universal solvent – is what removes much of the soil on a rug being cleaned. Our process is safe, gentle and controlled.

Rugs are ‘dusted’ mechanically to remove as much dry soil as possible before cleaning begins. Heavy particulate soil is dislodged from a rug by vibration, fine dust is carried away by an air vacuum system. Sand and grit embedded in a rug cut fiber and accelerate wear from the ‘inside’. Removing as much dry soil as possible is an important step in cleaning a rug.
