When you’re trying to hire great people, don’t limit yourself to the ones who have just the right title in just the right field for the job today. Instead, consider those who don’t, but are on a great trajectory and have the skill set to excel at the job tomorrow.

Some of the best people have non-traditional backgrounds (the product person who wants to get into Sales, the engineer who’d rather be a product manager), and will jump at the opportunity to work for an employer willing to take a chance on them.

One of my biggest bozo moments at Google came from ignoring exactly this advice.

In 2007, +Salar Kamangar  identified a promising young marketing associate and made a solid case for transferring him over to the Associate Product Management program. Salar argued that the associate was a self-taught programmer with strong performance in his current role and “a history of shipping things and working closely with engineers.” Instead of supporting the move, I took the narrow view and blocked the transfer on the grounds that he didn’t have enough formal technical experience.

Not too long after, that associate wound up leaving Google and co-founding his own highly successful company, +Instagram  . You’re welcome Kevin Systrom!  Glad to see things have gone so well for you, and for the record, I now wholeheartedly agree with Salar that you would have made a fabulous APM!

India’s politicians have become so venal and feckless that they are no longer able or willing to address the country’s entrenched problems.

This line summarizes everything!
