10 Easy Ways To MCM-Ify Your Home

If you're feeling the itch to nest but don't have the capital for a complete design overhaul, there are a number of easy changes you can make to your digs to get the mid century modern vibe without sending your back account back to 1962. It's all in the details, my dear. Here are ten tips to create the perfect retro inspired space that won't make your home feel like the set of The Brady Bunch.

1. As the original mid century modern gangsters like Mies van der Roe were fond of saying less is more. This means you've got to clear your clutter! The mid century modern home is a zen space; keep tchotchkes to a minimum and make sure all miscellany is organized. This isn't to say your home needs to be a sterile and devoid of personality. Display personal photographs in starburst picture frames in clusters on a console (like the Euro Style Galena) in a hallway with a small wooden dish as a catch all for the mail and keys.

2. Scour thrift stores and estate sales for mid century modern paintings and wall hangings. Large scale, abstract paintings hung on the wall sans-frame can be an inexpensive and dramatic way to give a nod to the Abstract Expressionists of the mid century modern era. Another mid century modern favorite was the tapestry. A wall hanging is impactful and adds a healthy dose of texture to your walls.

3. To further elaborate on that point, painting your walls white is an easy but important step to take your home to the mid century modern finish line. The mid century modernists had no time for shades of blue lagoon or milky coffee when it came to wall color. Simple, clean white walls let furniture and art shine. It'll make your space feel bigger and brighter too, so score yourself two more mcm points!

4. In the same vein, keep the color schemes natural when choosing furniture and upholstery. There are gorgeous, brightly colored mid century modern arm chairs out there, but if you're trying to make quick changes, feature furniture that has clean lines and natural colors. Mixing wood elements into your home are a mid century modern staple, which works on anything from a side chair like the Olsen Lounge Chair to a pair of salad forks.

5. Introduce mod graphic prints and pops of color with throw blankets and decorative pillows. Bold colors like orange, red, yellow and blue were mid century modern favorites and will give your living space warmth (figuratively and literally).

6. Adding a bar cart to your den, dining room or living room will instantly Mad Men-ify your space and add serious mid century modern credentials to your space. Take care not to overcrowd your cart; display your favorite crystal tumblers next to a decanter of whiskey and a couple bottles of small batch ginger ale and keep the extra large bottle of Stoli hidden away in the pantry.

7. Laying down a white shag rug underneath your coffee table in your living space may seem totally 70s, and it is, but in a good way! The shag rug is back, y'all. Rugs add depth and visual interest to a space that will make it cozy and give it that boho, relaxed vibe you're pining for (or is it Pinteresting for?).

8. Change out your lamps and light fixtures for mid century modern styles. Lighting is an essential part of any room and if you swap out the builder grade chandelier that came furnished in your apartment for a Pia Chandelier, the dining room will be instantly transformed. The Pia is sculptural and modern and will make as much of a visual impact as a piece of art. The same goes for adding an Arco Lamp replica over an armchair in your living room. No matter the style of that arm chair, with the Arco Lamp reproduction arcing over it, it will instantly transform to the mid century modern look.

9. Adding mirrors as decorative elements in a hallway or entryway is an easy, affordable way to add a mid century modern style in your home. The Burst Mirror by Zuo is a pricier option but one that would make a lasting, dramatic impact on your space. The Vishnu Mirror by Zuo is a more affordable option that will still give you the desired impact. The mid century modern designers favored mirrors on the walls to maximize natural light and to make the rooms feel more open and spacious. It's an easy trick and is there when you need to reapply your lipstick to boot!

10. Green plants are one of the most easily impactful ways you can transform a space. Add hanging spider plants in bare corners, line up a row of small succulents in your kitchen windowsill and nurture a small fiddle leaf fig to become the star of the show in your living room. The juxtaposition of lush greenery with naturally colored furniture with metal accents is SO mid century modern it hurts. The plants will also help to purify your air which is a bonus no matter what era you're after.

Let's iterate: the mid century modern home is all about clean! simple! lines! You're chasing after that low profile, calming, cool space that's got a hint of color just where it counts. You want your guests to feel relaxed and happy (and maybe just a little bit jealous) when they're at your place. The mid century modern home is a layered masterpiece full of timeless, elegant pieces that, on their own, are simple enough but when layered up together, create a crazily dynamic space that overflows with personality and depth. It's a delicate balance and one that takes time to accomplish. Indeed, redecorating your home - even just a minor spruce up! - is not an all-at-once prospect for most people.

It's a process that takes time; you've got to find the right pieces, to fit the right spaces, and for the right prices. You've probably got an Eames Lounge Chair replica on your wish list (who doesn't!?) but if that's not in your cards currently, trying any combination of the tips above will help push your pad into the mid century modern era quickly and affordably.

Mid Century Modern Apartment

You finally found it the perfect mid-century modern Upper East Side loft that would make Don Draper weep into his whiskey. The natural light is pouring in through the floor-to-ceiling windows facing the Park, the hardwood floors are gleaming and the vast expanse of white walls are just begging for a de Kooning.

You can't wait to have guests over to christen the wet bar but first - furniture. How do you create a livable, comfortable space that enhances the clean lines of your digs rather than overwhelm or inhibit the design? Luckily, the mid-century modern aesthetic celebrates comfort, simple luxury and high quality. These basics are anything but.

The couch is arguably the most important and most used piece in any mid century modern apartment. It is an investment that gets incredible cost-per-use and needs to be comfortable, durable and subtly stylish. The white Le Corbusier Sofa bed fits all three criteria and with a pleasingly reasonable price tag to boot. The genuine Italian leather is a soft and supple dream and the stainless steel finishes perfectly offset the bright white fabric. The added bonus is, of course, the ability to make the sofa into a bed and with space at a premium in New York City; multi-purpose pieces are not only welcome, but essential.

A small (but mighty) detail of the couch is how well designed the back of it is (it may even be cooler than the front!). The careful, complete consideration of the functionality and aesthetics of a piece of furniture is a hallmark of mid-century modern design. To shove the couch against a wall would be a cardinal sin of mid-century modern design principles. No, the furniture must float just so in a space to make its presence known without being shouty.

If the couch is the grounding wire of the living room, then the Eames chair is the firecracker. And when I say Eames chair, I mean Eames Chair reproduction (unless you're Jay-Z, I guess). The Eames is the sexiest girl at the bar because she looks self-assured and genuine, not fussy and try-hard. The Eames chair reproduction is all rounded, aerodynamic lines and luxurious, supple leather. Designed in the 1950's by Charles and Ray Eames to mimic the look and feel of a well-used first baseman's mitt, the chair has come to embody the fundamental design principles of the era.

Juxtaposing a black leather/Palisander wood Eames chair with the white Le Corbusier couch in the living room would be an elegant, striking pairing sure to make even the most jaded New Yorker swoon. And so, when you're sitting in your Eames chair replica, about to dig in to some Kurt Vonnegut, you'll need light to read by, of course. And where floor lamps are concerned, there's only one option. The Arco lamp reproduction. What a scene-stealer.

The Arco lamp replica is yet another example of the mid-century modern designer elevating both form and function to top billing when creating furniture. The Acro lamp is an immediately recognizable mid-century modern staple and is on the wish list of every design junkie in New York.

The Carrara Italian marble base gives the Arco lamp replica an extra boost of luxury, understated and sexy. The lamp's dramatic arch is a dynamic, graceful slash through the air it becomes a piece of art the way a Calder mobile would. To complete the living room set up, you'll need only a pair of Barcelona chair reproductions directly opposite the couch and a Tribeca coffee table between.

The Barcelona chair embodies the famous less is more maxim with its clean lines and low profile, making it an ideal seating solution for a mid century modern living room. With its tufted leather and sleek, slightly curved stainless steel base, the Barcelona chair replica is aerodynamic and understated. The L-shaped design of the Barcelona chair replica mirror the couches own and creates an inviting and aesthetically pleasing space. The coffee tables glass top adds another layer of texture and material, creating depth of space.

The tulip table with four Saturn dining chairs is a cheery, playful solution to a mid century modern apartment dining needs. The design of the table and chairs is at once both retro and futuristic (you could see the set in the Brady Bunch home or on the Jetsons). These pieces are of classic design, blending easily into the mid century modern home. Plus, while a dining room table is functional and necessary, the set demands little space, making it an obvious choice for a NYC apartment. Finish off the dining area with an Artichoke Chandelier (designed by Poul Henningsen in 1958) to create a truly inspiring mid century modern vignette.

For the bedroom, the Oliver side table is a classic mid century modern piece for a bedside table. Add a Spotlight table lamp to create an industrial-but-warm look to complement a low profile bed frame decked out in crisp white linens (with maybe a geometrically mod throw pillow or two). A punchy orange Saarinen Womb Lounge Chair and Ottoman is an obvious addition to the bedroom the name says it all! Comfort and serenity is paramount in a bedroom and the Womb Lounge Chair is a perfectly luxurious way to achieve both.

Clutter is a mid century modern no-no, so foyer and hallway storage solutions are a must. The Vive Console table solves the problem of errant gloves, scarves, bags and keys while still upholding the basic principles of the classic mid century modern apartment (which is especially helpful if it's the first piece of furniture you see when you walk into a home, setting a tone for the rest of the space).

The mid century modern design lover endeavors to design an apartment where every piece of furniture, every painting and every detail is beautiful, meaningful and necessary. That's not to say a mid century modern home lacks personality or warmth. No, the mid century design aesthetic is joyful and sincere. There's no place for irony or indifference and there's no such thing as form over function.

The vibe is relaxed and easy. With classic pieces like the Le Corbusier couch, the Eames chair replica, the Arco light reproduction, the Tulip table and the Saarinen Womb Lounge chair filling our your floor plan, your apartment is just that: relaxed and easy. In other words cool. Now, water the fiddle leaf fig by the window and open that bottle of scotch. It's time to enjoy your newly appointed pad.

The Mid-century modern home is a celebration of clean lines, open spaces and unfussy design. A Barcelona black leather chair is a perfect fit for it.

I think all in all they provide a very good service. I called with few questions about their product and one of the reps was very kind and patient, and addressed all the issues in detail. I was assisted with my order over the phone and assured that I can always count on their help in case of any problems. Fortunately, I didn't have to bother, as the chair arrived on time (4 business days after placing the order!!!). I'm really happy with the quality, not to mention the design.

So I am currently trying to fix an issue about a chair that was delivered to my grandfather. The chair is damaged and although I was able to easily place an order though a phone call I was told that issues and returns are not addressed through the phone under any circumstances. You must send and email and wait for what are most certainly template emails with no names attached.... Bottle line the furniture is beautiful but not constructed to the level the price suggests. And if there is an issue customer service is nonexistent.

This company is barely above the level of a scam artist. They sell legitimate products, but their main goal when selling to you is "how can I trick this person into buying this piece of garbage." The owner employs extremely unscrupulous marketing tactics, as evidenced by the fake review he posted here. He didn't do a great job at covering his tracks however, as he put his real name down as the reviewer. Take a look for yourself; "Daniel Levy" is the owner of this company, and here he is posting glowing reviews.

When I looked for replica Arco lamps, MHD had the best combination of price and quality that I could find. I also really liked the fact that it came with a dimmer, which was not true of other models. I was very satisfied with the quality of the lamp, which was just what I had hoped for. It was a bit difficult to assemble, as other reviewers had noted, but not too bad. It looks great with the half-chromed bulbs I found!

beware!! do not buy anything from them! especially an eames lounge chair! you will thank me! every single person that works here is a joke! there's not 1 professional employee here that actually follows through with what they say. i purchased an eames lounge chair about 1 year ago and as soon as i received it i noticed a big discolored circle on the top back rest wood area. it stands out pretty bad. i immediately contacted their imaginary customer service and they assured me i would receive a replacement in 4-6 weeks. well its been a year and they don't even respond to my emails. i asked for the original customer service lady that was helping me and they told me she didn't work there anymore. i spoke to another "customer service" person by the name of john colt and he said my replacement never came from china so i would have to wait another 4-6 weeks. called back after 2 months of not hearing from anyone and what do you know, he doesn't work there anymore either! then i speak to another employee named ronnie i believe. he tells me nothing came in for me so he would have to order another replacement and also guaranteed me a phone call on monday to confirm everything. well what do you know, no one called me! i call back and they say he doesn't work there anymore either! this place is a damn joke. my 5 year old is more capable of hiring quality employees. the turn over rate here is worse then a used car dealership. so last week i call again and this girl answers and says she's gonna make sure "customer service" takes care of this problem. i spend about 20 minutes on the phone with her explaining everything. she says, "i will call you on monday with an update, please tell me your phone number". i say "are you sure you're gonna call me?" she says yes guaranteed. well im writing this review on wednesday morning and i still haven't heard back from her. also, no one has even responded to my email. learn from my mistake and buy from someone else. you might get lucky here but why take a chance. if you get something defective or with issues, they will not honor their word and just give you the, "we have to order it from china and it takes 4-6 weeks for our containers to come in" spiel. then they won't call you and next thing you know its been a year and they have a completely new staff that isn't capable of much. do not be fooled by the reviews on google. "everything" they sell is made and direct from china. most other websites selling these pieces of furniture get it from the same place! the eames chair sounds like its gonna crack when you lean back. absolutely no tilt or give whatsoever. its like a metal chair. the wood veneer on the ottoman is chipping on corners. its literally falling off. the rim of the wood veneer that goes around the leather on the chair and ottoman is discolored and not in a natural way. it looks like crap! this is more like a $300 chair including shipping at best! my advice is save your money and buy the real deal or buy a replica for under $500 so that way you could just throw it away after a few years if it starts falling apart like this one. * Today is Feb 5th 2015. I will be updating my review on any progress or lack there of. I just sent them multiple emails.
