Haven't finished editing yet, but I can't wait to share. Ft Worth Botanic Gardens was squishy, but beautiful!

Sometimes you just have to go eat BBQ and feed some turtles.

Lyla made a dinner-friend named Elizabeth. They collected all the scattered pellets from the deck floor under the pellet vending machine and fed turtles for a good long time. Then it was time for ice cream! Elizabeth's scoop came with a lit candle, and our two tables sang her "Happy Birthday" to mark her eighth year.

After that, it was back for more turtle/duck/fish feeding for the girls, as Martin unabashedly performed an improvized location-specific Shakespearean monologue from the upper deck.

It was one of those "so happy, my face hurts from smiling" kind of evenings.

Aww, maybe if she was in a bad mood. But she's so gentle to flowers now. She makes a point of it!

On teaching the Children of the Future:

I teach MindStorms Robotics on Tuesday afternoons through Citizen Schools.  This week's adventure:

"A couple teams lost their programs from last week.  You have to be sure to save."  (Lesson 1: What's "saving" a "file"?)

"To save, click this third icon here. Does anyone know what this is supposed to represent?"

stony silence

"Has anyone here ever touched a floppy disc?"

One girl raises her hand, another asks "Does that have anything to do with Flappy Bird?"

Which triggered this mental journey.  Say, for the moment, that we measure the lifespan of the 3.5 inch floppy as a dominant storage medium from about 1984, when it was added to the Macintosh to 1998, when it was removed from the iMac about 14 years later.

This means that since 2012, the floppy disk has spent more time as an abstract icon than as an actual physical storage device.  If we'd realized this in advance, maybe we should have given it a more distinctive shape?

You may opt to date things a few years earlier or later on either side, but the math is likely to work out (or will before too long)

This is the reason why I don't enjoy interacting on Facebook, in order to have my posts pushed out to people who WANT to see my stuff, it seems like I need to post the most baseline things, like, say, me in a bikini. Or a kitten.

Dumbing down content to actually REACH my fans is ridiculous. If they're following me, they want to see my stuff. I don't have money to pay to reach all my fans for everything I post. And paying for views sucks in general, Facebook. So...yeah. Great video!

Great experience from the moment we were greeted at the door by the owner. The name-sake dish brought back fond memories (Opa!), and the eye-rollingly good mousaka created a new one. Everything was amazing, with well-balanced, home-cooked flavors. The restaurant's ambiance allowed me to almost pretend we were in Greece.

Best car wash I've experienced in the Austin Area! Everyone is always friendly, and the waiting area is pleasant. My favorite spot is the large rocking chairs out under the sun.

My experience can be summarized as "dumb" and "rude". I went there this morning to order breakfast tacos for my office. I couldn't get the guy behind the counter to understand that I needed the tacos to be separated by bag or otherwise labeled so we could keep track of what was in them for the office. He seemed extremely distracted and would not stand still to listen to what I was asking for. I asked if they had a vegan option and he offered potato and cheese. On top of everything, the customer behind me was being extremely rude and impatient, saying "time's tickin'" when I'd only just begun my order. The tacos might have redeemed the restaurant if they were good enough, but they were only sub par. The salsa was basically flavorless. I won't be going again.

I asked one of the people manning the estate sale if the plastic bag containing a blanket could be opened so I could see how big it was and what the materials were. When I went to pay, the woman at the register yelled at me for opening the bag, saying I wouldn't do it in a store, so don't do it there. Never mind that I asked to have it opened because there was no labeling on the bag. How was anyone to know what it was? It looked like a navy blue blob. Their prices were really high, even for an estate sale. They're disgruntled and unwilling to treat their customers with respect. Skip their sales.

I just met the owner and manager (Anil and Kamran) and they are both total sweeties! We shared a cheerful moment this morning, and I just love when people show love for their business. This 7/11/11 they will be giving away free baby-sized Slurpees and on 7/16/11 they'll be giving away hot dogs(?). Sounds like a fun thing to do in the heat of the summer!
