Ethnographic Museum (HDR Vertorama)

This HDR Vertorama was shot in the Ethnographic Museum in Budapest. It was a hot and sunny day, and everyone was either taking a nice bath or they were visiting the parliament building right across the street. So, I was virtually alone.

The image was created from 15 individual photos (5×3 autobracketed shots - three exposures each with 0, -2, +2 EV). Each of the exposure series was merged to an HDR image individually. Then, the tone-mapped HDRs were stitched together and post-processed in Photoshop.

New Mosque – Istanbul, Turkey (HDR Vertorama)
► Read the details of how it was created: [ j.mp/15NvZdc ]

The image was created from 12 individual photos (4×3 autobracketed shots - three exposures each with 0, -2, +2 EV). Each of the exposure series was merged to an HDR image individually. Then, the tone-mapped HDRs were stitched together and post-processed in Photoshop.

Location
This HDR Vertorama was taken in the Yeni Cami (the New Mosque) in Istanbul, Turkey. The construction of the mosque first began in 1597 and took more than half a century. Today, it is one of the best–known sights of Istanbul.

Challenges
The specific challenge of this image was the very low ambient light. The source photos were shot right after sunset, and very little light came in through the windows. With an ISO value of 1600, I opted for an underexposed AEB series to get acceptable shutter speeds, and I had to create additional exposures in the post–processing to compensate for this as much as I could.

Composition
When I was there to shoot the source photos, there were still a few regular visitors. I decided to include them in the final image since they give the viewer a sense of the scale. Additionally, the visitors emphasize the separation between the floor with the humans and the ceiling with the ornaments and the dome.

Post–Processing Approach
The edges of the frame came out quite dark due to the underexposure. I decided to make them even darker to enhance the contrast to the well–lit ceiling, making the ceiling the star of this image. Most of the post–processing work concentrated on that ceiling.

Most of the HDR Vertoramas I post are from the inside of churches. This is another type of temple - a temple of work - otherwise known as an office building. ;)

This HDR Vertorama was created from 12 individual photos (4×3 autobracketed shots - three exposures each with 0, -2, +2 EV). Each of the exposure series was merged to an HDR image individually. Then, the tone-mapped HDRs were stitched together and post-processed in Photoshop.

St. Martin’s Cathedral (HDR Vertorama)

St. Martin’s Cathedral in Mainz, Germany is 1000 years old and its interior is predominantly Romanesque. This style is much simpler than that of later churches. The big challenge in terms of photography here was the notable lack of light, even on this sunny day. I had to go as low as 1/8s on the brightest exposure here. Of course, tripods were not allowed. This was quite a challenge in post-processing.

This HDR Vertorama was taken in the ceremonial room of a palace in southern Germany. Taking such photos while you are on a regular visit is quite a challenge. You cannot use a tripod, there are typically other people around you, and the dynamic range is very high. Nevertheless, with the right technique, anyone can do it.
