The departure of the rig may not mend ties with Vietnam, which no longer views China as a friendly ideological partner and may seek alliances with countries such as the Philippines, Japan and even the U.S., said Le Hong Hiep, a lecturer at Vietnam National University in Ho Chi Minh City.

Apple products are popular in Vietnam, where a brand-savvy young population covets the instant recognition a slender iPhone brings, said Lam Nguyen, Ho Chi Minh City-based country director at International Data Corp. He predicts Vietnam smartphone sales will increase 56 percent to about 12 million units in 2014, and Apple will get a good chunk of that.

Bich Ngoc, who earns less than $60 a week and has a newborn son, cobbled together four months of savings to buy the latest iPhone so she could impress her colleagues who have older versions of the device.

In addition to enlisting other countries to protest moves against foreign fish, Vietnam’s government is fighting back in other ways.

For more than eight years, Luong Thi Kim Oanh bought cases of thread from China for her garment factory in Hanoi. Last month, rattled by an anti-China riot in her country, she placed her first order from South Korea.

“I used to buy 90 percent of my thread from China,” said Oanh, 52, who employs about 200 people at Viet Hung Garments & Embroidery. “Shifting sourcing may cost us more, but we need to think of it now, or it may be too late. You never know how things may turn out.”

First time coming to Gành Đá Dĩa (Da Dia Reef), a national landscape vestige in Phu Yen province, I was much liken to a scaredy-cat, too fearful of missing my footing to stand up and savor the picturesque gift Mother Nature offered to the Vietnam’s central coastal land. Two days later, coming back unexpectedly to it - as a tour guide to a foreigner – several things came to thrill me and that surprisingly transformed me into a very different person who enjoyed climbing over reefs and playing with big waves crashing from the East Sea. Why suddenly I broke my rule of being a lone wolf?

Check out the last part of my Phu Yen blog: Explore a paradise behind Da Dia Reef.

Michael Bloomberg's advice for those entering the workforce:
"You get to go in and you get to work harder. I always make sure that I am the first one in the morning and the last one to leave in the afternoon."

From the exciting moment I found my beloved durian in a small town in Massachusetts during my first days in America to the moment I found its smell troubled my host, her friends and her daughter to the moment it had to land in a trash bin.

Durian is my favorite fruit. Popular in South East Asia from Vietnam to Malaysia, durian stands out for its thorn-covered rind and offensive aroma but pleasant taste. When its season comes in the s...

My frustration grows non-stop when a driver of the Vietnam's most well-known bus company which I preferred talks non-stop behind the wheel. One of his hands controlling the wheel and the other holding his cell phone talking. 10 minutes, 20 minutes and 30 minutes have passed and he is still driving chatting over the phone, ignoring my loud request that "please stop talking and respect your passengers' safety."

I keep calling the company's hotline. No one answers. I leave a message to tell what is going on behind the wheel (see the photo). No reply. I call the hotline again 10 minutes after the driver resumes his lengthy phone call right after he finishes his drop-off and pick-up in the city. The line seems busy then. He only drops his phone after I call the ticketing operator in my hometown of Chau Doc. Soon after that, a terrible accident almost happens.

With only my backpack and Canon, I have ventured on my own into one of the most imposing destinations in Vietnam. For the first time, I have lived a very different life, a life of a very old-fashioned person with no facebook, no emails, no GPS and least phone calls and texts ever without any discomfort but peace in mind and joy in life.
-          Come on, Chau. Look, suddenly you became a scared mouse. -          I just can’t move my legs, Uncle. -          You were so courageous at the top of the lighthouse this morning. No one ...
