There is an article, Out of the Tarpit (a bit long, but totally worth it) that explains some of the negative effects of state. Another article (which is a lot shorter and easier to read) by Robert Martin http://blog.8thlight.com/uncle-bob/2012/12/22/FPBE1-Whats-it-all-about.html explains functional programming (albeit with some errors in his code) and why he feels that functional programming will eventually supplant OOP (his answer also has to do with state).
