100th Birth anniversary commemoration of Douglas Jayasinha ( 1915 - 2015 )
Hundredth birth anniversary of former Mahinda College, Galle CC, SSC, Moratuwa SC and All-Ceylon cricketer Douglas Dias Jayasinha will be commemorated this year. The swashbuckling left hander was the first southerner to play for the country in an era where it was quite difficult for outstation cricketers to find a place in the national team.

He captained Mahinda College from 1934 to 36 having made his debut in 1931.

Lanky Jayasinha, the left hand bat and right arm bowler had the unique distinction of donning the All-Ceylon blazer in 1937 when he was called upon to play for the national team against the touring New Zealanders.

In 1935 Jayasinha played for the Combined Colleges against the Indian Universities team.

The schoolboy prodigy had scored six centuries and a dozen fifties and captured 80 wickets for Mahinda College during his school career.

The Mahinda College all rounder played for the Galle Cricket Club upon leaving school in the premier cricket tournament in the country the "Daily News" trophy,

The highlight of his club cricket career was scoring three centuries in 1937 for Galle CC on consecutive Sundays, 103 against Colts, 112 n.o against BRC followed by 121 against the formidable SSC attack.

Jayasinha popularly known as ‘DD’ and the highly respected and adored cricketer and a man with integrity and honesty was also a selector for the Board of Control for Cricket in Ceylon from 1961 - 1973 and served as its chairman from 1963- 1973.

Those who served under this great cricketer and human being as selectors were stalwarts such as Sathi Coomaraswamy, K.M.T. Perera, Bobby Schoorman and C.T.A. Schafter .

It was this team of selectors led by Jayasinha who picked young Micheal Tissera (24) former Thomian captain and NCC cricketer to lead the All Ceylon team in 1964 after C.I.Gunasekera relinquished his duties as captain.

In the cricketing circles it was considered to be a gamble, but young and unassuming Tissera proved the selectors right and came up with a sterling performance leading the country with distinction.

It was an era politicians never dared to influence the selectors and the latter never bowed down to them, quite a contrast from today.

Jayasinha was known to be a man of modest means and frugal needs among his friends and close associates which is a rare quality for a man who had achieved so much success in the world of cricket.

The veteran cricketer had also helped a number of youngsters to reach the top in the crikcet with generous help and advise.

He passed away on April 20, 2006 in Colombo.
