The dude wants pink shoes, he gets pink shoes. And how can I disagree? They sparkle: a clear sign of excellence.

Our yearly donations: 8 years and 8%: Always giving more. May you find the happiness of giving in the new year! http://madprime.org/articles/2013/12/eight-years-and-eight-percent-always-giving-more/
(This is a joint blog post with Chris.) Our tradition continues: to celebrate our eighth year of marriage Chris and I are giving 8% of our joint pretax income. (Each year we give 1% more.) This giving is made to organizations which we believe have the most concrete short term “estimated value” ...

Nice -- G+ produced an automagical animated gif! I built a stool for Phineas on Friday, and the next morning he was very enthusiastic about tooth brushing. (He had been at it for 15 minutes already before I thought to photograph him.)

Vi Hart's awesome video, worth all 30m: music, creativity, copyright, twelve tones, shapes, science, and laser bats.

Across the sky! An educational opportunity as well: I think you can see Alexander's band on the lower right. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander's_band

Double rainbow all the way

Taken after last night's thunderstorm; Central Square, Cambridge, MA, looking down Mass Ave and past City Hall towards Boston.

I took photos (with a new lens -- Canon's 24-105 f/4 IS) and stitched them into a panorama using Hugin, and +Madeleine Ball did color enhancement and straightening.

Please share if you think this matters (and I argue that you should). If enough people care, maybe the NIH policy team will pay attention to our recommendations.

The NIH should be honest that the genetic data they're making people share is identifiable. Participants deserve access to their own genetic data if they're required to have it placed in the NIH database where it may be broadly shared with others.

+Madeleine Ball found a huge cicada that had come to visit our (eighth floor) balcony this morning.  I got out the macro enlarger lens and took photos..

Chris and Phineas got me a little birthday gift to celebrate my diagnosis! (My suspicions were confirmed by a monospot test on Wednesday.)

Admire Scalia's honesty?

"I join the judgment of the Court, and all of its opinion except Part I–A and some portions of the rest of the opinion going into fine details of molecular biology. I am unable to affirm those details on my own knowledge or even my own belief."

Story
Introduction
I work with the Personal Genome Project helping scale up sample collection for whole genome sequencing, and on improving our ability to interpret individual genomes (especially looking for rare variants that may cause traits or disease). My background has been in biology but I've become more and more of a programmer, with a lot of connections to free software/free culture people (including my husband, who works for One Laptop Per Child).

In my spare time I do nerdy things like read sci-fi and comics, games (board, video, and role-playing), and cat adoration.

I wish Life Alive were less expensive and faster, but the food is so good and healthy that I end up returning regularly. A ton of vegetables -- especially kale -- with warm sauce and occasionally crunchy bits (like nuts) mix to create that extremely rare combo of both healthy and delicious. Definitely consider adding avocado to your wrap, especially if getting something vegan.

This is our weekly pub. Every Sunday night, for years, our local gang of geek friends meets up here. Did you know Grendel's won a Supreme Court case? Did you know the letters in their name rearrange to form the words "Nerd Legends"? The beer is good, and the food is certainly a good deal when half-priced. My recommendation is the Natural Disaster burger with a veggie patty -- what I get every time I go!

Harvest has been a great back-up for food for us. It's expensive but also has a great selection of vegan options. The bulk foods -- especially spices -- are a good deal. I also like to use them for bulk fair trade coffee and local bread from When Pigs Fly.
