Each year I've admired it from afar. MY TIME HAS COME. The weekend can't come soon enough.

Jesse and I did our best to find "Overlook Hotel guest" costumes for last night's showing of The Shining forward and backward.

The film itself was beautiful, haunting, and the best shared crowd experience of the festival so far. People laughed and gasped at the uncanny symbolism. Spontaneous applause broke out when the two narratives resolved in the center.

I was there. It was grand. One of my favorite Tom Waits performance experiences ever is now hearing him start plonking out "Chicago" on the piano. To me that song of hopeful immigration encapsulates my decision to move to California, and to hear him sing it so close to my new home meant everything. Jesse and I danced up on the hilltop, wrapped in a blanket, happy.

It's brave of us to stay, even braver to go. Wherever she goes, I go.

He's such a ridiculous scrap of tiny wee kitten. He is no bigger than a hiccup. I LOVE HIM. Leaning toward adopting him. We're tossing around Newt as a new name. He's just a little Newt.

I was a dutiful foster parent and I gave him back for adoption. He was adopted his first day. I made a mistake. He should have been my cat. I regret failing to foster fail, as they put it.

There'll never be another Felix -- never another cat with a broken tail, who eats from a bottle I'm holding, who I raise from such a tiny scrap, who loves me and is loved like that.

At least his adopters look thrilled and excited. He'll be loved and cared for.

New Year's Eve! I bought a new half-mask, which I'm a little in love with.

That's ME at about 22 seconds in lying on a rusted-out car that says "The end is here." Let me tell you how good it feels knowing my zombie make-up jobs are good enough for Mythbusters commercials: GOOD.

THREE DAYS. I spent three days blanching, scrubbing, and boiling pork leg bones for traditional tonkotsu ramen broth. I made my own alkaline salts for homemade noodles. I made tea eggs, I poached quail eggs, I chopped and rolled and folded and stirred.

It was no good. Tonkotsu is beautifully unctuous and rich, but mine wasn't flavorful enough on its own. A fresh batch of meat stock added some smoky flavor. I'm not saying we starved. I'm not saying it wasn't worth it. But I still think I'll just make up some miso next time.

I love Sketch. The service is wonderful (they remembered I'd asked about their take-home chocolate sauce and kept me apprised of the new batch's progress every time I went in) and the ice cream really shines. Flavors I have loved: The Earl Grey with candied cocoa nibs to top it. The chocolate sorbet (!!) that's as rich and dense as gelato. The summery strawberry. The very coffeelike coffee. The light, sweet, floral lavender and rose geranium flavors. The astounding vanilla bean. The burnt caramel with caramel and sea salt topping. Mmmm. The empanadas are also tasty, flaky, and just enough for a big snack/light meal. I also love the take-home candied citrus peels and marshmallows. (Yes, I treat myself here. A lot.)

I knew what dog I wanted to meet and went in excited. But Theresa at the front desk resentfully rattled off directions to the kennel (a nearby gentleman kindly led me back, as I didn't know my way around), left me alone in the adoption room with no toys, treats, or supervision, ignored me entirely when I knocked and then asked for help in the adoption room, snapped at me for not following policies she never informed me of, and behaved irritably and unprofessionally when I asked what the adoption process entailed. Why would I adopt from a shelter that won't acknowledge me? How can you adopt when staff won't tell you how? Theresa does not belong at the front desk (though at least she was forced to acknowledge me eventually; the other woman at the desk never even made eye contact). The dog and I weren't a right fit, unfortunately, but now I know to keep searching for my new pet at other area shelters.
