We regularly receive donations of older Macs which we break down and recycle or re-use if we can.

This week we received a very special old Machine with a 5.25" hard drive - a whopping 8GB of storage on a Quantum drive with and IDE interface.

Amazing to think we now have hard drives over 256 x bigger in a form which takes up much less space - stunning what the last 19 years has brought us!

Here is a pic of this wonderful and fully functional hard drive with a 3.25" and 2.5" for comparison.

I you need more (and fast) storage on your Thunderbolt Mac you could do worse than the OWC Thunderbays. Available to take full sized (3.5") HDDs or SSDs or the Thunderbay IV Mini - which takes laptop style 2.5 HDDs or SSDs. Both feature full speed Thunderbolt 2 and up to 4 drives. Sold without any drives, they are a great upgrade or a way to use drives pulled from other Macs on you new one (especially if moving from an tower style Mac Pro).
Please do take a gander;

A post to our blog which is very popular at the moment: Let us know your thoughts?
Today we were asked an interesting question: A customer was given a 2009 Mac Pro as a work Mac and told he could do whatever upgrades he wanted as long as the performance was improved; up to £1500. What would you do? This sparked some serious debate in the office; mainly about the order which ...

One of today's board rescues. Mac Mini with broken fan and front board sockets. Careful microsoldering brings them back to life. Cost £115 + vat versus new logic board.

So Mac OS X El Capitan -Mac OS X 10.11 - is just around the corner so here are some tips and tricks to help you complete the upgrade smoothly.

Tip #1 - Always (ALWAYS) have a full backup of your OS and important files before completing the Upgrade.

We recommend you complete a full Time Machine backup, and also have a Clone of your current OS.

If you use the wonderful Carbon Copy Cloner, you will need to make sure you are running 4.1.4 for it to work in 10.11.

Why Both?

The advantage of a Clone is that you can boot from it and get back to a working state if the worst happens or if some vital piece of software stops working after the upgrade. A Time Machine backup often updates before you have a chance to test everything. The OS may upgrade library files such as the Mail or Photos folders to later versions which may not be compatible on an older version of Mac OS. We recommend unplugging your time machine backup disk before applying the upgrade; and plugging it back in after you are happy that everything is working. You may need to erase and restore to go down to your previous OS.

2TB SSD? Why yes, we do have those now (they are not cheap, but.. that is a lot of storage in one little 2.5" Hard drive form factor!) - We have had many customers asking after these...

An unpleasant new trick for the PUP/PUA MacKeeper - We see many customers who have been tricked into installing this menace of an application. Scareware at it's worst!
A fake Safari update prompts you to install MacKeeper and ZipCloud.

I would never use this company again! They carried out a hard drive upgrade and damaged one of the RAM slots whilst carrying out the work and then came up with every excuse in the book as to why it wasn't their fault. Their approach to customer service is poor and they believe they are unaccountable for any damage made during their repair work. I took in a machine in full working order and now have a RAM slot no longer working so effectively have half the RAM that I had before I took it into them. Beware this is not a reputable company!

Dropped off my Mac Mini on a Friday and it was ready for collection on the following Monday. They recommended an SSD upgrade and fitting a second 2TB hard drive for storage of music and movies, and so far it's working out brilliantly. Great friendly service and solid advice, would recommend to anyone looking to extend the life of their Apple hardware.

I cannot praise Mac Upgrades enough for saving my bacon with the dreaded Yosemite! I added it and it completely messed up my Logic Studio 9 programme. They added a new drive, moved all my docs and programmes to the new drive on Snow Leopard and everything worked brilliantly. They kept the old drive with Yosemite, in the hope Apple would fix the problem (they still haven't as at Nov 2016!) The charge was really reasonable, and actually negligible compared to not being able to use Logic . I really did not want Logic X, I know my Logic Studio 9 like the back of my hand and just want to work! Thank you Mac Upgrades. On my way to them NOW for a MacBook track pad! Paul TJ O'Neill
