Testing the upcoming OS X 10.11 El Capitan on my Xserve3,1 in different virtual machines (VMware ESXi 6) – feels like a "service pack 1" for OS X 10.10 Yosemite … ;)

Testing the upcoming macOS 10.13 "High Sierra" since some weeks now – and it's so horrendous buggy in nearly every part of the system including 'every day' apps like Mail, Calendar and Contacts ... So the 'best practice procedure' is the same like every year: After some months (in other words: right now) you can upgrade without problems to the actual 10.12.5 / 10.12.6 "Sierra". But you should wait for a 10.13.4 or 10.13.5 release (coming in springtime and summer of 2018) if you wanna upgrade to the latest and greatest "High Sierra". Believe me!

Apple was talking more than 20 minutes about new emojis and other 'eye candy' features of the new iMessage at the opening Keynote … But no second about the upcoming next-generation filesystem called APFS – in 2017 this will bring us: Flash & SSD Optimization (a unique copy-on-write design uses I/O coalescing to maximize performance while ensuring data reliability), Space Sharing (allows multiple file systems to share the same underlying free space on a physical volume; unlike rigid partitioning schemes, which pre-allocate a fixed amount of space for each file system, APFS volumes can grow and shrink without volume repartitioning), Cloning of Files and Directories (a nearly instantaneous copy of a file or directory that occupies no additional space for file data, when a cloned file is modified, only the modified blocks are written to new locations on storage - in this way, the file system can store multiple revisions of the same document with less storage space), Snapshots (read-only instances of a file system on a volume, the OS can use snapshots to make backups work more efficiently, and offer a way to revert changes to a given point in time – this sound like 'TimeMachine 2'), Fast Directory Sizing (quickly compute the total space used by a directory hierarchy, and update it as the hierarchy evolves), Atomic Safe-Save (performs renames in a single transaction such that, from the user’s perspective, the operation either all happens or does not happen at all), Encryption (is supported natively!!! you can choose one of the following encryption models for each volume in a container: no encryption, single-key encryption, or multi-key encryption with per-file keys for file data and a separate key for sensitive metadata, it uses AES-XTS or AES-CBC, depending on hardware. Multi-key encryption ensures the integrity of user data even when its physical security is compromised). And it will scale very well from the smallest devices (Apple Watch) to high end ones (Mac Pro). R.I.P. good old HFS+ … ;)

Don't know why, but 2016 seems to be a great year for my company – got my ticket for the MacSysAdmin in Gothenburg/Sweden (October 4th to 7th).
