This is without doubt the best hardware store I have ever been too. The array of products they have & their stock levels are just mind boggling. Staff are very knowledgeable too.

Terrible after sales. They ignored the Sales of Good Act 1979 on faulty products. They try to fob you off onto the manufacturer and then introduce obscene fees if a fault doesn't exist in order to dissuade you from returning the faulty item. For being such a long established company, you would think they would know better.

Amazing range of goods, and excellent customer service with staff that always go the extra mile when it comes to helping out, if they have not got it, they will get it and always have great gift ideas too.

On Saturday 5/3/2016. I found two young boys and a third one a little bit older chatting behind the counter. The shop was almost empty. I asked for some advise regarding a paint I needed. The older one just vaguely pointed the section of the shop with paints without even getting out of the counter. I asked more information (I needed some advise) but he told me they didn't have the paint I was looking for and to go to another shop. The result was that I actually went to another shop where I was advised properly and where I bought the same paint I spotted on Mackay's shelf. I wasted time and Mackays lost 4 times (by redirecting my money to another shop and by paying three employees for mistreating a potential client). I bet the manager of the shop would have treated me in a completely different way. In fact my past experience in this shop had been completely different. The staff was very helpful and competent. Unfortunately I guess that bad apples are everywhere.

Very sorry to read that you have had a bad experience sir. Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention. We do hope that this has not put you coming in to our shop in the future. Rest assured that your comments are being taken very seriously and investigated. We have built a reputation for giving good service and that is why our company has been trading for over 100 years. Yours sincerely Neil Mackay

Old school hardware shop where you can say "I need a 10.2mm drill but for tapping an M12 1.75 pitch hole in mild steel" and not be looked at like you just spoke a foreign language. Genuine experience from the staff here gives the kind of experience you need when asking for something niche. I will keep on going back for sure.

I first went into Mackays when I was about 6 years old with my father. He's a model engineer and I have fond memories of the shop back to the Mid 1980's. For as long as I can remember I have been a customer at East Road, and have never had a bad bad experience. Service is alway great, advice and range is also extensive. There's no need to feel intimidated by questions as quality, friendly free advice is always available. It comes as no surprise that they have been trading for over 100 years, by the same family. well worth a visit - Even though It's not about 40 miles away from me.
