‪#‎HumansofMac‬ “If you asked me my style, I couldn't tell you,” she says. It’s a mix of modern and pattern, color and curves, but not a lot of stuff . As a financial analyst, she’s not a conspicuous consumer. “I just buy what I need. I’d rather spend money on experiences than buy things,” she says.
Another one of our residents was featured in InkKc Magazine for her awesome lifestyle and great apartment design. Thanks for letting us post, Thu, and glad you are a resident with us.

Thu Vu’s tidy Hyde Park apartment is a visual reflection of her travels but with simple design, it’s also an aesthetic reprieve. “It’s a mix of modern and pattern, color and curves, but not a lot of stuff,” she says.

‪#‎TBT‬ to the New Bern Apartment Hotel in 1925. Originally named, Peacock Hotel due to the 6 foot tall Peacock statues above the entry.
The building was renamed the New Bern, due to residents complaining that the Peacocks were, "offensive". The building is constructed of two 9 story brick, terracotta, and reinforced concrete towers. It is one of the only buildings in KC to be built in the Sullivanesque style and is now listed with the National Register of Historic Places. It is currently under restoration and we will post a before and after #tbt in about 6 months when we are near completion. ‪#‎MacProperties‬ Photo credit: Joan Mickalak

I had to move to Kansas City fairly quick because of a job offer. Out of numerous apartments I e-mailed, Mac Properties were the only one to give me a quick response. I spoke with April Cottrell and she was especially helpful, staying on the phone with me for over 30 minutes to guide me through the units and answering questions for me. I appreciated that because she was probably very busy. The area is nice and I haven’t had any problems so far. The apartment itself is also pleasant (I live in Kenwood). There was an issue with installing Google Fiber however. Management were shuffling their units between two buildings and long story short, it was a nightmare dealing with Google Fiber because they were confused on my address. After I contacted management, the issue was fixed swiftly. But my dilemma could have been avoided if management would have notified me what they were doing with their units. I’m a little disappointed there isn’t an indoor bike rack for Kenwood residents. The walls are paper thin. I live by the stairwell so I can hear every time someone enters. But it’s no big deal with me. The water takes a minute to heat up, especially when showering. Parking hasn’t been an issue with me. I can always find a space. The minor issues aside, I would recommend Mac Properties.

Thanks for the feedback Philip. We have identified the issue with Google Fiber and do a better job of informing new move-ins! I will make sure we discuss the issues with the water and indoor bike racks. Thanks for your residency.

The good: Leasing staff is friendly and courteous, promptly notify me when I have a package delivered. The properties are all centrally located to nearby Westport, the Crossroads and downtown. Historic architecture. Neighbors are all friendly and nice. The Bad: I've had a flock of pigeons living in the wall near some of the platforms/pillars outside my bedroom windows since last summer. They're huge, leave mounds of droppings directly outside my bedroom windows and make awful noises very early in the morning (~4/5 AM) and continue until the sun goes down. I called about this problem last year and nothing was done. I've now called every few days for the past three weeks to get someone to resolve the issue but the only response I get from the leasing office is that maintenance is still trying to figure out how to fix it and someone will call me back shortly with an update (never happens). It seems like it would be a pretty standard procedure for a pest control company but I'm assuming they don't want to pay to have them come out so they're attempting to give me the run around until I stop calling. It's been a very frustrating experience and I've lost a good bit of sleep due to it. Just an FYI for anyone shopping: check for pigeons around your windows or you could be stuck with them. Edit: They've called back and have pest control coming out. I'll report back. Edit 2: Received a call from maintenance Monday after one of my routine calls for a status ensuring me that pest control would be out Wednesday. I was here Wednesday and never saw pest control. I called today (Friday) for another status report and was told that maintenance and pest control had figured out where to put a tack strip (where I had been telling everyone since I began complaining) but they were currently "waiting on a bid." I asked what exactly that meant and was told that they have to ~ "figure out a price to give Mac and then the price would have to be approved through Mac financing etc." or something along those lines. So, if I'm understanding correctly, instead of them fixing the issue I will have to wait until the price is right and appropriate approval has been granted before they will fix the problem. I was told I would receive a call next week with a status update (I've received one call back since I started complaining a month ago, so I'm sure it will be me calling them again). I'm not sure why they don't just fix the problem and then settle up afterwards. Either this is a giant circus or I'm still getting the run around and no one is actually doing anything. Either way I'm here stuck with pigeons.

Three years in and still loving it. Very responsive maintenance staff and beautiful buildings. Kitchens and bathrooms are very modern as well as the lobbies. Google Fiber is great and there is also a pool. Rent is reasonable for what you're getting. Only downside is the few neighbors who have no regard for neighbors, but such is expected in a place this large.
Response from the owner - 3 months ago
Thanks for the awesome review Josh. You have been a great resident. Maybe we will do a kind neighbor campaign soon for gift cards. :)

I love living at MAC Apartments. I feel very safe and very taken care of. From the moment I met my leasing agent, I felt this way. This company must take care and value their employees in such a way that makes them feel valued and empowers them to they can take very good care of their customers. Every time I've worked with a MAC employee, they go above and beyond to make sure my experience is top-notch and that all my questions are answered. I also love what they are doing for Kansas City--renovating and caring for historic buildings that have fallen into disrepair, plus giving beautiful, clean, affordable apartment living to residents. I also love the sense of community I feel by living here. I have not yet attended any of the MAC events, but I hope to one day, and even just knowing that these events exist, that there is a monthly newsletter, as well as a well-organized FB points system, where I can participate and be a member and an advocate for this company, makes me feel like a part of a larger community working for good. I love that they send out information about their staff, whether it be new maintenance worker hires or staff baby showers. All of this works to add to my sense of being a part of a community, and one that cares about all of its workers. I love the cleanliness and design of my building and my studio apartment. I love the appliances and gorgeous kitchen in my studio as well. The only thing I need is a studio with a better angle to the sun, and I'm working on figuring out how to do that because I plan to stay with MAC Apartments for the foreseeable future.

The apartments are all pretty new, and the staff is friendly. The police are terribly stingy about parking and "no-left-turn" tickets, which I am not used to having not previously lived in an urban environment. I also used the MAC provided indoor bike rack, but the door is consistently locked and my attempts to get continued access to my bike have not gone well. Other than that, I love it here!
Response from the owner - a week ago
Hey Kasey, Thanks for the review. Has the lock situation for your bike rack been handled? Definitely reach out if not. Jkoury@macapartments.com. Sorry about your tickets!

MAC is a great location. Close to the plaza, westport, downtown. That is amazing. Staff is nice. I love how modern my apartment is. I think it's nice they throw events for all the residents. Downsides: Maintenance is under staffed so alot does not get done. I mean alot does not get done. My boyfriend has to call several times to get 1 thing taken care of. Neighbors are sometimes rude(i.e.-leaving trash in the hallway, slamming doors, loud in the middle of the night, smoking weed and not filtering it). The walls are paper thin at the Windsor house. So you can hear your neighbors doing EVERY LITTLE THING. It's not their fault MAC did not put a little more money into insulation. Parking is ok I guess. Paying extra for parking seems very ridiculous to me when MAC owns most of ARMOUR. MAC has potential In my eyes. I think they should be a little more cautious of all their residents.

Hey Briana, thanks for the review. It is great to get honest feedback from our residents. Of the things we can control in your message: We have hired 3 new maintenance techs for our residents this month and they should be knocking out work orders. I will email you to see what needs to be done if it hasn't yet. The parking is in high demand on this street but hopefully there is enough street parking if you do not want to pay. Once again thanks for the kind and constructive feedback. Let us know if there is anything else we can do to make your experience better. If you have neighbors that are participating in illegal activities, please contact the police ASAP to get this taken care of.
