Semantic Web and data science folks - you will want to check this out. It isn't just another questionnaire - it's a stealth tutorial! Mouse-over the schemas and RDF data to see highlighted matches. Click on the live example s to dig in and enjoy. Want to see (and use) the equivalent validating query in SPARQL - it's there in the live example - just click on validating query. Also very useful is remaining triples to see what isn't matched by your Shape Expressions, by using the SPARQL query directly on the data in your triplestore. If this isn't fun, what is?
This is a public questionnaire to guide development of the ShEx (Shape Expressions) language. Your responses will be given as input to the RDF Data Shapes WG as requirements for SHACL (though this questionnaire is not a product of Working Group). Please indicate here if you would like to ...

A trip to Portugal to give a keynote at the International Symposium on Semantic Mining in Biomedicine http://www.smbm.org/ , where lots of interesting work was presented. Portugal is beautiful, full of history, delicious food, and Semantic Web!

Dataset descriptions is a general standard for publishing datasets so that they are discoverable and can be evaluated using SPARQL.

Announcement here:
http://www.w3.org/blog/news/archives/4681

Abstract
Access to consistent, high-quality metadata is critical to finding, understanding, and reusing scientific data. This document describes a consensus among participating stakeholders in the Health Care and the Life Sciences domain on the description of datasets using the Resource Description Framework (RDF). This specification meets key functional requirements, reuses existing vocabularies to the extent that it is possible, and addresses elements of data description, versioning, provenance, discovery, exchange, query, and retrieval.

I am an editor of the specification, together with +Alasdair J G Gray, +Joachim Baran, and +Michel Dumontier, as well as many contributors. It is the culmination of years of work.

Specification here:
http://www.w3.org/TR/hcls-dataset/

If you look at the Tooling Support section, you will notice that there is a tool that uses Shape Expressions ( http://www.w3.org/2015/ShExpressivity ) to validate dataset descriptions.

It should be useful for datasets at https://www.cancerdata.org/.

That about sums it up: "Big data has many interesting aspects, but bigness isn’t one of them"
I hate big data. That is, I hate the term, mainly because it implies that size is the interesting aspect of big data. Data volume has been exploding for decades. Big data has many interesting aspects, but bigness isn’t one of them. I’d like to highlight two of the more [...]

Net neutrality is essential to a democratic Internet. FCC do your job! Letting corporations control priority and speed of information access will enable those who are determined to slyly perform political censorship with impunity and inject invasive commercial interests into all our communications and information sources. Let companies make money by creating content and adding value - not by creating artificial scarcity!

But! We can always rely on clever hackers to get around these decisions! The next step in net neutrality is to spoof what you're doing!

+Sandro Hawke said it best:
I think this is the first cause for which I've ever asked people for money.

It's now or never. Today's the last day to pledge for this round of matching funds, and if we don't make it by midnight, well, I for one will be extremely disappointed. The alternative futures are bleak, and this is the best opportunity I've ever seen.

Yes, global warming is important, yes food safety is important, yes net neutrality is important, yes gun control (in some sensible way) is important, yes sane drug laws are important, etc, etc. And all of those issues are completely intractable with the current level of what amounts to corruption in Washington. This is our best chance to fix that. Please pledge $100, $50, at least $25 right now. (Also, please like/share/comment in G+/Facebook/Twitter so that it becomes visible to people.). Of course, it doesn't matter if you pledge at https://mayday.us/ or on my pledge page but please pledge!
Our democracy needs an upgrade.
