+Leo Sipowicz Yes, today's project is the terrarium. Tomorrow is polymer clay if that's more your style :)

A biosphere is a sealed, self-sustaining ecosystem.

+MAKE  ANSWER: A biosphere is everywhere on Earth's surface with life. It's also an attraction in Montreal

Answer:  A biosphere is a sealed, self-sustaining ecosystem

ANSWER: biosphere is a global sum of all ecosystems, but a terrarium is a section of an ecosystem

The general term "vivarium" is used to refer to a small-scale simulation of an environment/habitat, such a terrarium, aquarium, insectarium (insect and spider habitat).

Also, a vivarium or terrarium is an area, usually enclosed, for keeping and raising animals or plants for observation or research. Taken from Wikipedia.

why do you need to add the cactus mix to the terrarium

how much sun light do they need
Make:

+Harrison Walker counselor hangout is at 3:30 PST. And you're already in our circle for the invite.

I was at a beach in Camargues (south of France) today - lots of plants! :)

If you put a little bowl inside a closed biosphere and poor water in it to represent a little pool or lake, wouldn't the water cycle work? If you leave it out to sunlight, then the water would evaporate and condense on the lid, then drip (representing rain), and then water the plants! You could also re-fill the bowl every few days!

Make:

+Pierce Taylor The question about metal in the terrarium would be a great question to ask during the limited hangout at 3:30 PST!

Can you use ''aquarium rock'' as a substitute for pumice?

Make:

+christian foshie Probably close to a window or someplace that gets some light each day.

+Aine Kilbane No worries! What you just saw is called a hangout on-air, which has a few people hanging out that is Live and everyone can watch. The limited hangouts with the Junior Counselors are smaller and you can join in and talk back. You've been added to our circle for the hangout, so you should get an invite in the next 10-20 minutes. +Pierce Taylor

ok, i am following,  i would like to join the hang out
Make:

+Tea Nix Great! Invites will go out shortly.

+Julius de Weerth Glad you liked it! We'll be having new counselors and new projects everyday until August 24th (well except Saturdays and Sundays of course).

+Jim Wygralak Great idea with the sundial - but I think I use too many plants in my terrariums. Would need to be pretty big to get it to work - and lots of light.

Additional Tid-Bit - Don't let water settle in the leaves of your plants it will contribute to the rotting of the plant.

+Daria Musk Thanks to you and +Sage Musk for joining us! Chickens, dinos, and junk from your junk drawer definitely deserve to be in a terrarium! Love how you were able to go out to the forest and get some moss.

Hey, thanks so much +Natalie Villalobos and the MAKE crew for having us! We had a great time. Pictures coming soon.

I missed the hangout today! Will the videos always be up for future use? And I'd like to be added for future hangouts! This sounds SO cool!! :)

+Madison Estabrook No worries - we're doing to have Maker Camp Monday-Friday until August 24th. At 2pm PST we'll be hosting the Hangouts on Air with the counselors, and then at 3:30pm there's a Hangout you'll be able to join with just the junior counselors.

Thanks! I'm excited for future projects! And thanks! I love plants - I have remodeled closet just for them! I especially love carnivorous plants and cacti! :) Thanks again, Natalie!

Haha thanks guys! I'm SO excited! This is gonna be AWESOME!!!!!! :)

+Sam Stowell Cool! Can you show me how you remodeled your closet for your plants?! That sounds radical! Would love to share your photos so people can see your set-up and maybe make their own. I didn't get to talk about carnivorous plants today as we featured mostly succulents, but I want to make a carnivorous terrarium soon! Use the #MakerCamp  and #WeirdScienceWednesday  hashtag if you do post photos and/or post the link here!

Okay! I have a whole bunch - but the thing is I'm new to google+! I joined just for maker camp! How do I use a hashtag? I might just put up the link - I have a bunch!!

I've gotta go somewhere - when I post them, should I just post them on this hangout?

+Sam Stowell So when you are on your profile, craft a post from the share box where it says "share what's new" . Share how you did it, why, what mistakes you made, and what you did to optimize the build. Then where you see the little camera icon you can build an album to attach from photos onto your post. Then type the # sign and without hitting the space bar, start typing MakerCamp and do the same for #weirdsciencewednesday. It should highlight blue if it works. If that is too confusing, you can just post a link here!

+James T great idea Sylvia! Some of those polished bedazzle crystal beads in the carbon layer... Of course in rl you polish minerals after mining them. (^^,)

+James T (^^,) I had no idea you were the super awesome Sylvia when I commented; your t-shirt ninja dad doesn't look half as cute as you do. My 10yr old son dropped his Google account when they changed the age limit, and opened a new one where he lied about his birthday. Bending the rules like a whammy bar.
