HOW YOU CAN HELP YOURSELF IN THE FIRST FEW DAYS OF AN ACUTELY PAINFUL BACK.
The general rule these days is to keep moving but in the first few, very painful, days you are best to just listen to what your body is telling you. So if movement is very painful keep it to a minimum and try to get in the position that is most comfortable, whether that is maybe lying down or sitting and if you are able, have a little potter around every now and again or just try to gently shift your weight side to side or gentle pelvic tilts so you don't stiffen too much. As things improve increase the amount of regular
As hard as it may seem try to relax and breath!
Try using cold packs, frozen veg wrapped in a thin tea-towel over the epicentre of pain for 10 mins every hour may help reduce any inflammation.
If cold doesn't help try heat which can help relax the muscle spasm. Use a hot water bottle wrapped in a tea-towel for 20 mins every few hours.
Don't be afraid of using pain relief if you really need it but speak to your GP or pharmacist for advice first. If you can lessen the pain it will allow your muscles to relax and improve the situation especially if it allows you to get some sleep.
If you have some sort of back support belt it is safe to use that short term if it helps the pain, it is not recommended for long term, continuous use eg over several weeks.
Finally call your local osteopath if you are able to travel with out too much aggravation of your pain they may be able to help calm down any muscle spasm and gently loosen things up with treatment to help your body start to heal itself more quickly and also investigate the root cause of your problem.
