Today we celebrate the "Día de la Virgen de Guadalupe"

Every year on the 12th December we celebrate Our Lady of Guadalupe (Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe) day. This is one of the most important dates in the religious calendar. People from all parts of the country make their way to Mexico's chief religious centre where they hold a mass ceremony and a traditional fair in her honour.

It’s believed that on this day in the year 1531 the Virgin of Guadalupe (which is a title of the Virgin Mary) made an appearance on the Hill of Tepeyac in front of St. Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin and asked him to build a church in her honour.

Our name has a close relation to this celebration as Lupita derives from the name Guadalupe; it’s a diminutive (in Spanish ito or ita) of the abbreviation (Lupe) used in Latin America, where is common to use the short name as an everyday way to refer to them.

The Dia de la Virgen de Guadalupe became a national holiday in 1859.

Decent authentic Mexican restaurant. Right in the middle of tourist-trap central, this buzzing Mexican joint deserves a visit. The staff are super friendly and food comes out of the kitchen at a dizzying pace. Everything tasted fresh and the price wasn't bad to considering the location.

Food was very good and is the perfect place for a lunch in this area! But be warned gets busy really fast around the 12pm rush...Service is the only thing they need to focus on. Very disorganised and ended up waiting far too long to be served. Majority of the tables who were seated after us ordered before we could and the food took far to long then to be cooked!...Would give them another chance, as it was probably just a once off.

Excellent leisurely lunch. The burritos were delicious and generous. We also tried the frijoles charros which was like an incredible bean and bacon soup. Fresh churros with chocolate sauce rounded the whole thing off. Threw in some tasty cocktails too, all for a reasonable £50 for 2 of us. Definitely coming back.

In my very personal opinion Mexican cuisine is generally overrated, and this place makes no exception: it is a mishmash of simple tastes, where something that equates to a sandwich all of a sudden rises to the headlines as if it was a high quality delicacy. Still, if you're into Mexican food, I think overall Lupita does a decent job of serving an authentic experience, with ingredients that seem of good quality (although I was underwhelmed by their beef) and competent preparation. I enjoyed more one of their burritos than their famed tacos or quesadillas (pretty disappointing, also because of the corn flour tortilla, which I found a bit dry). The place is welcoming and bright, but sudden gusts of chilly wind were sweeping the entire ground-floor room whenever someone opened the front door (very frequently, on Friday night): even after we changed table and went to the farthest possible one from the door we were cold. Service is fast and attentive, cocktails and juices reasonably good, prices in what I would say is a mid range for this kind of cuisine.

The food was fairly good, but the portions were very small. I was still hungry after I finished my meal. The staff weren't very nice either. I don't think I'm coming back.

I've been here twice and both times I walked away feeling like I had just had the meal of a lifetime! If you want to know how to fall in love with nutrition this is the place to do it. Atmosphere, food and service were all very good.
