IR method for control of fatty acid methyl ester content in the laboratory of fuel storage in Oman

February, 2018 – Salalah, Oman. Lumex Instruments successfully implemented IR method for the control of fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) content in diesel fuel in the laboratory of Mina Petroleum, one of the biggest fuel storages in Oman.

Measurements are made according to EN 14078:2014 standard by a cutting-edge FTIR Fourier spectrometer InfraLUM FT-08 manufactured by Lumex Instruments. The tool was installed in December and has been successfully operating for the past three months.

Lumex Instruments solution provides reliable control of FAME content starting from the lowest concentration level of 0.05 % (V/V). A simple and convenient module of quantitative analysis integrated into the software SpectraLUM allows getting the result of FAME content immediately in percentage by volume and without additional operations.

Mina Petroleum controls FAME content several times a month, but previously samples for analysis were sent to the external laboratory that brought additional expenses for the company and made analysis time very long. The use of InfraLUM FT-08 allows getting the result in a couple of minutes and reduces expenses significantly.

The control of FAME content in diesel fuel or domestic heating fuel provides the right fuel identification and is used for registration of possible FAME impact on engines and fuel systems.

Lumex Instruments also provides solutions for IR-testing diesel fuel in accordance with other standards, for example ASTM D7371.

Fertico controls quality of fertilizers using capillary electrophoresis system CAPEL-105M

February, 2018 – Niš, Serbia. Lumex Instruments has supplied capillary electrophoresis system CAPEL-105M for fertilizer producer Fertico.

Fertico, a Serbian extensively developing producer of fertilizers, had the task to strengthen process control at all stages of production. Lumex Instruments specialists, relying on their long-term cooperation experience with the organizations from the agriculture industry, came up with the method of capillary electrophoresis to analyze Fertico samples.

Using the CAPEL system, the specialists of Fertico successfully carry out the determination of such quality parameters of fertilizer as ammonium nitrogen (NH4-N), nitrate nitrogen (NO3-N), phosphorus (P or P2O5), potassium (K or K2O) and amino acids in organomineral and mineral fertilizers. Fertico has opted for the Lumex Instruments solution, which allows the company to control both raw materials and the final products. The ability to work with several analysis protocols and quickly switch between them is one of the important features of the installed system.

Capillary electrophoresis system CAPEL is a cost-effective and convenient tool for solving a wide range of customer’s analytical tasks. Lumex Instruments at PEFTEC 2017

Seminar on Capillary Electrophoresis for the determination of inorganic cations and anions in Thailand demonstrates the benefits of CE method

In the beginning of October, Lumex Instruments held the hands-on training on Capillary Electrophoresis (CE) in Thailand for our users and potential clients. This event was organized together with our distributor CE Combination and involved presentation of CE method and demonstration of Lumex Instruments CE system Capel-205.

After the theoretical introduction, our chemical engineer performed measurements of the mass concentration of inorganic anions and cations in water using Capel-205. The users provided the samples for analysis themselves. To check the accuracy of the results, the same samples were analyzed by ion chromatography (IC). The two analytical methods gave comparable results demonstrating good reproducibility and correctness.

During the demonstration, the seminar participants were amazed by the advantages of CE method compared with conventional IC technique:

- Low reagents consumption (less than 10 ml per day)
- No expensive columns with sorbents and problems with their aging and replacement
- Simple sample preparation - basically only filtration, degassing and dilution
- Fast and low-cost analysis
- High efficiency of mixture components separation

The highlight of the demonstration was the anions determination in an unknown sample. The results obtained were later confirmed at the user laboratory and it appeared to be quite impressive for the participants. Besides the cation and anion determination in water, Lumex Instruments provide various CE methods for the food industry and agriculture, environment control and pharmaceuticals, such as determination of organic acids in drinks, fructose, glucose and saccharose in beverages, amino acids in feeds, protein concentrations and many others.

Development of Continuous Emission Monitoring in India

Lumex Instruments participated in CEM India 2017 - Conference and Exhibition on Emissions Monitoring, which took part in New Delhi from September 26 to 28. The aim of this event is to improve environment compliance enforcement system in the country and offer technical and practicable solutions.

At the exhibition, Lumex Instruments together with our Indian partner TECHMARK Engineers & Consultants demonstrated Mercury monitoring toolkit which consists of mercury analyzer RA-915M with pyrolizer PYRO-915+ and OLM 30B sampling system. This toolkit is designed for efficient and cost-effective on-site determination of total and speciated mercury emissions in accordance with US EPA method 30B. It is also used for the mercury determination in coal, fly and bottom ash, gypsum, waste water, and other effluents.

Mercury Monitoring Toolkit provides rapid and direct on-site analysis without any complex and expensive sample conditioning compared to other techniques.

Background information

India is one of the world's fastest growing economies and is currently the third largest polluting country in the world. To solve this problem The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has released guidelines and started adopting Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems (CEMS) in India.

The CEM India conference follows on from the highly successful series of CEM events which have been held in Europe since 1997. This event brings together industries, regulators, integrators and manufacturers to share best practices for emissions monitoring.
