This is a great article comparing non-orm code vs Entity Framework and Nhibernate code.
I just ran into trouble trying to delete an child object using EF as my ORM. This helped clarify my issue and I must agree with Vladimir that having EF leak a bunch of its implementation (foreign keys, id, etc) into the domain model makes EF harder to use in a DDD or Onion Architecture.
DDD principles: Entity Framework 6 (7) Code First and NHibernate 4 comparison

Every line of code we write adds technical dept, just try and make an effort to make it a small debt.

I have been in all these positions before, Inheriting an application with multiple ways of doing the same thing and being the one to introduce yet another new shiny way of doing the same thing.
Understanding the trade offs and learning to deal with legacy code comes with experience and most likely means you have to keep your ego in check (hard for developers since we always know better)

I would have to agree with his arguments on why we should not allow API's to be copyrighted
APIs should not be copyrightable so that programmers can reimplement interfaces to support testing, interoperability, and to encourage competition.

As I approach the big 4 oh career planning and where us old developers fit and go is something that seems to be popping up a lot more (or I am now just paying attention).
Do I move into Management, Architect, technical expert, Self Employed, Contract, ...
Time to get my 3, 5, 7 year plan together so I can throw it away when everything changes.
I got a lot of really great answers about my “Where do old developers go?”, I'm feeling much better about this now Smile . Now let turn this question around, instead of asking what is going on in the industry, let's check what is going on with you. In particular, do you have a career plan at all ...

Sacrificial Architecture.

"...to design a system for ten times its current needs, with the implication that if the needs exceed an order of magnitude then it's often better to throw away and replace from scratch"
Sometimes it's a good thing to be writing code that you expect to throw away in a couple of years time.

10 seems like a magically round number but yeah I totally agree about overdoing things, applies not just to software architecture but life in general :)

Great short.
This short animation for Channel 4 is brilliant in many ways. It shows an overly developed world inhabited by millions of cute little creatures, with cute little jobs, and cute little bars. All is fine till the final twist—so unexpected that it blew my mind.
