Incredible Project Loon! Circumnavigation success!

One of our balloons has had quite a journey over the past few weeks. It did a lap around the world in 22 days, and has just clocked the project’s 500,000th kilometer as it begins its second lap. It enjoyed a few loop-de-loops over the Pacific ocean before heading east on the winds toward Chile and Argentina, and then made its way back around near Australia and New Zealand. Along the way, it caught a ride on the Roaring Forties — strong west-to-east winds in the southern hemisphere that act like an autobahn in the sky, where our balloons can quickly zoom over oceans to get to where people actually need them.

Traversing the stratosphere is particularly challenging this time of year because the winds actually change direction as the southern hemisphere moves from warmer to colder weather, resulting in divergent wind paths that are hard to predict. Since last June, we’ve been using the wind data we’ve collected during flights to refine our prediction models and are now able to forecast balloon trajectories twice as far in advance. In addition, the pump that moves air in or out of the balloon has become three times more efficient, making it possible to change altitudes more rapidly to quickly catch winds going in different directions. There were times, for example, when this balloon could have been pulled into the polar vortex – large, powerful wind currents that whip around in a circle near the stratosphere in the polar region – but these improvements enabled us to maneuver around it and stay on course. We can spend hours and hours running computer simulations, but nothing teaches us as much as actually sending the balloons up into the stratosphere during all four seasons of the year.

Take a look through our photo album to see some of the specific improvements that have been made to the balloon technology, thanks to the lessons we’ve learned in flight.

Introduction
Rallying the technology is good brigade.

I'm a marketer and tech lover. (A Roogler = Aussie Googler.) Add me to circles for updates on stuff I like: mobile, tech, music, food, beach; stuff I live: Google, YouTube, Google+, Android, marketing, small biz, sydney.

If you're new to Google+, here are some quick tips:

1. Add people into circles

Once you have 20-50 people into your circles, you're ready to share the right things with the right people, read interesting posts and talk face-to-face-to-face (that's what we call Hangouts).  I have about 1000 people in my circles -- that's a little unwieldy -- but I can filter updates from different circles.

Add people who are active on Google+ - this could be friends, family, co-workers, people who share the same interests as you. You can find people to add by searching for them, seeing who other interesting people have in their circles, finding suggested users, adding a shared circle of a group or community.

2. Get great content in  your stream

Google+ is great for rich content, not just from friends, but other interesting people.  Find people to add to your circles who share the same interests as you.  What’s Hot shows the most popular posts being shared on Google+ right now.  I also save searches to see a feed of posts around topics I'm particularly interested in like Bondi Beach and Android

3. Get people to add you to circles

The easiest way to get people to add you is to engage - post, comment on posts, reshare interesting posts - people love it when you help make their content go viral!

Fantastic architects and a pleasure to work with. Michael and Jo did an incredible renovation job on our house. It was a relatively small job and despite them having much larger clients at the time, they dedicated a lot of time to us, presented really innovative design solutions and managed an uneventful build all within time and budget.

Amazing massage!! I had a pregnancy massage with Michael Joseph which was the best massage of my life. Michael was lovely and took the time to understand what I needed. He incorporated hot stones, deep massage and some yoga stretches which left me floating down Macrossan St! Definitely recommend!

Fabulous coffee art, yummy chicken, pomegranate, sweet potato & spinach salad. The corn cakes are beautiful too. They were very generous with me and only charged half price for a meal for my son which was enormous.

Fantastic family restaurant. Love the cabbage salad and the gelato is all made on site with fresh ingredients. It's a bit pricey and you have to wait a while for dishes but this is because it's all made fresh.
