Lost Boys | School of VFX - Industry Relations - Digital Domain Recruiter Visit -
We had the pleasure of hosting Laurent Verret and Josh Gugliotta, recruiters at Digital Domain Vancouver. We spent the afternoon touring the studio, viewing student projects at desk, and demonstrating the depth of our advanced craft based curriculum which sets Lost Boys grads at a uniquely high and job ready skill level. Big thanks to Josh and Laurent for sharing their time to get to know us better and we look forward to sending them more Lost Boys in the future!

Group Project - Midnight Special - Guest Alumni FXTD from ILM - To kick off our FX development process, we invited FXTD Alumni Yash Polke (currently working at ILM) to be a guest speaker for our current class of FXTD's. Coincidentally, Yash was responsible for creating the original effects that we are referencing for our group project from the movie "Midnight Special." Sharing production stories and other words of wisdom is a inspirational way to begin any project. Big thanks to Yash for taking time out of his busy schedule to contribute to the next generation of Lost Boys FXTD's!

Group Project - Midnight Special - Class 22 - For the final project of our Curriculum, our students take part in a cross program group project. Our FX TD's work together with our Compositors to create a sequence inspired by the film "Midnight Special." This project's objective is to not only produce a visually appealing scene, but to also combine our two programs and showcase the students' talents to the fullest. Our teams will work together over the period of four weeks to recreate a sequence inspired by the film, "Midnight Special." Recreating the apocalyptic scene where a young boy with mysterious powers brings down a storm of debris from an orbiting surveillance satellite. Multiple passes including smoke trails, spark hits, debris, and impact damage are to be generated in Houdini and blended back into our action sequence.

FXTD (Houdini) Program - Industry Relations - Side Effects Visit! - We recently had the pleasure of hosting a visit from Julie Lottering, Education & Training Manager, Side Effects Software. What was scheduled as a hour and a half meeting turned into an all day visit! Julie toured our studio and was able to meet with our current FXTD students learning all about the amazing projects they are working on. Side Effects is a great company not only for their one of a kind 3D Software but also for their personal relationships that they actively develop with the community. We’ve been very grateful for all their support over the years. Here’s what Julie had to say about Lost Boys after her visit.

- “It’s totally inspirational to see you and your team in action, alongside the students and the quality of work they are producing. You have a knack for developing artistic judgement in your students which is what distinguishes them professionally and helps them make contributions to the industry. After touring the classroom and viewing the student work it was hard to believe that they had only been working with Houdini from one month to less than a year– the quality of their work is technically excellent while remaining uniquely expressive. It’s very rare to come across a program where the level of all the students’ work is of a Senior quality.” - Julie Lottering, Education & Training Manager, Side Effects Software
