http://www.natureknows.org/2015/03/watch-these-elephants-always-gather-to-hug-this-woman-the-reason-tore-my-heart-up.html  What a contrast in human behavior—the ones who buy and sell the ivory tusks and those who labor with love from dawn to dusk.   #dontbuyivory

Unreal....  and police got involved too?  This world is really messed up.   #policestateusa   #nohugsallowed
A popular special needs teacher was suspended and reported to the police for hugging an autistic student. The child's own mother is the teacher's biggest defender, and yet the teacher still faces discipline and criminal charges. Demand these charges be dropped and that the school reinstate the teacher and apologize for its ridiculous and disparaging claims.

http://youtu.be/MwIB3-oftmo Enjoyed listening to this as background music this morning.  I have often been asked which of the five senses I would miss most if I didn't have it.  I definitely would miss hearing.  I would probably say sense of taste I could live without, but all our senses adds to the joy of life.  We could all be more aware as to how we are using our senses and what we are putting into our sensory experiences.   #musictherapy   #senses

I am swimming in a sea of knowledge! http://www.minitex.umn.edu/MnLink/About/Libraries.aspx If you are like me and like to read books before you purchase ones you really want, did you know about MnLINK? It is an interloan library system between regional libraries and college libraries in Minnesota! I think it started up about a year ago, and our Minnesota tax dollars fund it. I found a business book from a different regional library that wasn't in the Hennepin County library system, and a lot of resouces from Red Leaf Press can be found here too!  See if your library is on the list and simply use your barcode number to request materials. (If it is available in your own library, of course, request it from your own library system.)  This is my resource tip of the day! #minnesota #interloanlibraries #teachertips

I just began reading this free book I received at an early childhood educators conference.  This is exactly what I needed to voice my concerns about legislation concerning preschool education.  We have to be sure the programs implemented actually serve our children well.  We need to keep testing and long teacher-directed assessments out of early childhood education so we can focus on giving children what they really need, which includes child-directed and play-centered learning with rich experiences to explore and discover the world.  Children need loving, caring, and unhurried teachers and caregivers who understand them and help nurture positive relationships so they can become their very best selves in their own special way.    Everyone should read this book as if affects all of us.  If you are an early childhood educator, please contact me for further information on how to get your free copies.

Had a great meeting this morning with Senator John Hoffman regarding the K4 for Kids bill.  We are on the same page about making sure this is not a Common Core initiative. (Minnesota is one of only a few states that hasn't adopted Common Core but makes decisions on our educational programs at the local level.)

Lawmakers have to be careful when taking a look at this bill and be aware of how this will be implemented.  When I have learned more about 4K for Kids, what most of these programs are is 2-1/2 hour (10 hours a week) instructional programming that will not help parents who cannot afford preschool or alleviate the expense of child care for working parents. Working parents will still need child care or full day child care programs that will provide transportation to the public schools for this instructional learning. ECFE classes have proven their quality of learning in the Anoka-Hennepin district. If this was an extension of this type of program, it would probably be a great bill to pass for Minnesota children. Also, if I remember correctly, teacher to child ratios were 1:14 in some of these 4K for Kids programs; in any case, the numbers were really high for 4-year-olds. So before this bill has a chance of getting passed, let's proceed with extreme caution and really know what is going to be implemented (make sure it is not connected to Common Core), and put the needs of children before our own agendas. Call your senator with your questions and concerns and let your voices be heard.
