Well said, Freya! And in such a beautiful dialect of Dutch, crystal clear. Is it perhaps Limburgish? It sounds so similar to the "platt" I heard in Düsseldorf when I was an exchange student, many decades ago. -- Loren (applied mathematician)

The best Shakespeare in the world: Oregon Shakespeare Festival. And, along with Shakespeare, OSF commissions and produces world-class modern theatre every year. We went to see the Shakespeare, we stayed for the modern and experimental works, and we return every year.

For all Mac users out there, here is a year-end column with links to the best advice of 2012 from Mac 911. Perhaps most valuable is an article on how to locate your Home folder on an external drive rather than the internal startup drive. This is a must-read column for all serious Mac folks!

Good news for every part of the world: fertility rates continue their 50-year plunge down to sub-replacement levels.

This retrospective article in the New York Times is a fascinating look at the difference between what we thought we knew and what, in hindsight, was really the case.

Climate-change conspiracy theories come under the microscope in this article. It's dense, but very interesting. I hope this line of research into internet-enhanced conspiracy theories will continue to improve.

I'll repost to Facebook where my conspiracy theory friends like to congregate.  Thank you for finding this.  They will love it.

Takes me back to those days of paper tape and wire wrap. And then there was that real-time OS I wrote for the PDP-8/L data-logging. It ran in 12k of RAM, with room to spare. My masterpiece.

The linked YouTube video gives a superb visual representation of the decline in arctic sea ice volume, 1979-2012. It also has an interesting synthesized musical score.

Applied mathematician with an interest in models of peace and war
Introduction
For most of my career I have been a consulting mathematician, with strong interests in statistical theory, the use of mathematical modeling in the social sciences, and the dynamics of peace and war.

Durante la mayor parte de mi carrera he sido consultor en matemáticas aplicadas, con un interés fuerte en la teoría de estadísticas, el uso de modelos matemáticos en las ciencias sociales, y el dinámico de la paz y de la guerra.
Bragging rights
By the age of 16 I had been around the world twice. That same year I smuggled 10,000 IUDs through the Soviet Union and into Pakistan (it's a long story, best told with lots of vodka).

It is hard to express just how exciting the theatre productions of OSF really are. We came originally just to see some Shakespeare. We stayed on for the experimental theatre productions, and the freshly-commissioned works that OSF mounts every year. We have seen theatre in almost every major venue in the world, especially those places that specialize in Shakespeare. OSF is our hands-down favorite, matching or exceeding the best that London and Stratford have to offer.
