I had a wonderful week with David, Nancy, Charles, Raymond, Elizabeth, Bob, Jimmy and Bill in Woodworking Essentials. These guys were focused and cut incredibly precise dovetails. I'm looking forward to working with you guys again. Thanks for attending my school! -Lonnie

During the past few months several men brought their sons to Woodworking Essentials to learn to craft wood by hand with planes, saws and chisels. What a great idea! And great looking work, too! Thanks guys, it was a pleasure working with you.

In one of our recent woodworking classes, Bill, Greg, Rod, and Peter each built a pencil post bed. The long, slender posts stand nearly seven feet tall and they taper to just one inch at the top. Great work everyone! I'm looking forward to photos of the finished pieces.

June was a busy month at our woodworking school. Guy, Ken, Michelle, Tony, Scott, and John each constructed a reproduction of an 18th century Pennsylvania slant front desk. They dovetailed the main box at home before class. Then we spent two weeks adding the drawer dividers, feet, base molding, gallery, and lid. They'll construct the drawers at home.

Besides learning a lot of woodworking skills, we like to have fun at our woodworking school! Here Brianna and Simone proudly show off their hand-cut dovetailed drawers. (www.lonniebird.com)

We had a fantastic group of woodworkers here last week for Woodworking Essentials. Everyone had a great time cutting lots of dovetails as they constructed a small table with a dovetailed drawer. It was a great week of fun, learning, laughter, and camaraderie. Thanks everyone! -Lonnie (www.lonniebird.com)

Our new Federal-style Serpentine Chest is garnering a lot of attention and is featured in the reader's gallery of the current issue (August 2015) of Fine Woodworking magazine.
This magnificent chest of drawers has the most pronounced curve of any serpentine chest of the period; the apex extends beyond the chest corners to create a beautiful, bold sculpture in wood. The entire front of the chest is curved including the top, drawer fronts, drawer dividers, base molding, and even the feet. And, unlike most serpentine chests, the curve doesn't terminate at the ends of the drawers, it continues to the corners of the chest. Adding to the beauty and complexity of the chest are the curves on each side of the case which also flow sensuously and terminate at the canted corner. Although the class doesn't meet until September of 2016, it has already sold out and so I'm offering a second date. Here is the link to the class: www.lonniebird.com
