A typical day in the life of Matthew Gibson, double bass. Actually, is there any such things as a typical day for an orchestra??

Today is the 100th birthday of the late great violinist Yehudi Menuhin. We had a long and happy relationship with Menuhin, starting with his first concerto recordings in the newly-opened +Abbey Road Studios in 1931 when he was just 15 years old.

Here he is playing the Beethoven Violin Concerto in 1962, with our beloved Sir Colin Davis on the podium, in the BBC's International Concert Hall series. How amazing that these things a) were recorded and kept and b) that YouTube exists for us to be able to watch today.

And a few from behind the scenes, taken by Les Films Jack Febus. The concert was broadcast live on Mezzo TV in mainland Europe, and was live on BBC Radio 3 in the UK and beyond. You can listen again to the broadcast here

We had an absolutely brilliant time at the fifth annual BMW LSO Open Air Classics concert in Trafalgar Square on Sunday. Many thousands joined us in the square for a free concert featuring the music of Tchaikovsky. There was a bonus flashmob moment in the square before the concert, and we were also joined on stage later by young musicians from LSO On Track and the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. And, despite the looming dark clouds, the rain didn't ever arrive. What a night! #BMWLSOOpenAir

Perhaps we'll just get these guys in for tonight's concert and take the night off?! Scary stuff!

Happy 90th birthday to our Patron, Her Majesty The Queen. Thank you for your service to our country and to the many charities of which you are Patron. We are looking forward to celebrating with you in June at The Patron's Lunch.

One of the world's top symphony orchestras, based at the Barbican Centre in London and the world
Hello world. LSO calling. Thanks for just being here to read this. We hope to see you sometime at the Barbican in London, or perhaps on tour, or if not, then here in cyberspace is just fine. Pull up a chair and let's chat.

The London Symphony Orchestra is one of the world’s top orchestras. Our home is at the Barbican in the City of London, where we perform over 80 concerts every year, and at LSO St Luke’s, a converted 18th-century church just up the road which is the base for our LSO Discovery community and education programme. We also run a record label, LSO Live. Each year we tour to several different countries, and return to some regularly where we have residencies.
