You may be able to get a better financial aid offer from your college of choice...just don't expect to set off a bidding war for your kid.

Introduction
I'm one of the most-read personal finance columnists on the Internet and author of several books including the best-selling "Your Credit Score," "Deal with Your Debt, and "The 10 Commandments of Money." I'm a Bankrate.com contributing editor and write a weekly column for Reuters news service. My question-and-answer column "Money Talk" runs in newspapers nationwide, including my alma mater, the Los Angeles Times. You'll hear me regularly on public radio's Marketplace Money, Los Angeles' KFWB and Chicago's WBBM. I've appeared on everything from CNBC to Dr. Phil. I also do a fair amount of public speaking (thanks to Jeremy Vohwinkle for the cover shot, above). But my (so far) unfilled life's ambition is to be selected for the "Not My Job" section of "Wait Wait Don't Tell Me."
