Day 7 of my video blog project (Context:

Can you believe I've never been to a rock concert before? First time for everything, I guess! Thanks for inviting me, +James Gable!!! I've never been much of a partier so I guess I'm making up for lost time -- partied hard, crashed even harder. Oof. At least my growing meetup group Learn to Code LA is motivating me to get back to normal and do some work again soon.

Day 5 of my video blog project (Context:

Today my friend Timothy Phan ( helped me make my very first collaborative video! See?! Proof that I have friends now, woohoo!! I've come a long way since my friendless-loner-with-social-anxiety days.

A day of great conversations and idea-generating made me realize that the next step up for me is to make more friends with whom I can collaborate on creative projects! I'm really missing that in my life.

Also, walking a mile in the pouring rain with no jacket or umbrella on my first work day since quitting my job -- what a beautiful feeling! It was like walking through a metaphor, cleansing myself of the past, starting my new adventure with a fresh perspective. This was one of the best days I've had in a long time!

Day 3 of my daily video blog project

(For context, see I almost gave up today, and the silliest, simplest thing restored my motivation! Don't you love when that happens?! I also figured out how to control my camera from my laptop and experimented with a voice-over style video for a change. Small wins :)

Fighting depression with curiosity - a new daily video blog project

Have you tried something similar? I'd love to hear your experiences with creativity, depression, side projects, quitting your job, or any of the other things I ramble about in this first video. (I'm hoping this daily video blog project might help me fight depression, overcome self-consciousness, and help me start working on my passion projects again -- specifically, my crazy learn-everything-about-everything project!)

I would write more, but I ran out of time for today -- it's almost midnight, and I need to get some sleep! Tomorrow is my last day of work, after all.

Today I tried out test-driven development with JavaScript for the first time! I'm using, a mentorship community and set of programming practice problems. I wrote about it in detail in my daily #webdev  blog here:

What do you all think of the new feature so far? I've been testing it out over the last month and so far I've found it really useful! See my first collection here: :)
Introducing Google+ Collections, a new way to group your posts by topic

Our happiest Google+ users are those who connect with others around shared interests and passions. So we set out to give people a place to express the things they love. Today, we’re announcing Google+ Collections, a new way to group your posts by topic.

Every collection is a focused set of posts on a particular topic, providing an easy way for you to organize all the things you’re into. Each collection can be shared publicly, privately, or with a custom set of people. Once you create your first collection, your profile will display a new tab where other people can find and follow your collections.

Posts in collections you follow will appear in your Home stream, with a link to easily jump right into the collection so you can get to similar content from that author. Collections give you a great way to find more of the stuff you love from the people you follow.

Collections is available on Android and the web, and iOS is coming later. For Android users, make sure to update your Google+ app to get access to Collections.

For inspiration on interesting topics, check out our Featured Collections page here:

Create your collections today and share what you love.

Day 6 of my video blog project (Context:

Another long, personal video in which I discuss my progress with overcoming social anxiety, my insecurities about my own voice, and my busy first week of unemployment -- and this time I have Medusa hair and no makeup. Watch at your own risk! (That said, I'm still finding the process of making bad videos to be very enlightening!)

I think that they are probably "normal" and we are not.

No offense. LOL

Day 4 of my daily video project (Context:

Exploring my complicated relationship with math to see what I want to do next for this project:

Just another rambling video blog that I threw together at the last minute. Controlling my camera from my laptop works like a charm, but then I forgot that the light from my laptop turning on and off would be really distracting in the video. Oh well! I know for next time.

I read an article about math skills and our 'cognitive breaking point' a few months back that explained a lot about my own mathematical limitations.
For me I think it happened in middle school with some particularly bad math teachers and curriculum gaps.

Day 2 of my fight-depression-with-curiosity video blog project

In a rush, gotta run out the door! Here's the result of 1 hour's worth of setup, filming, editing, exporting, uploading, and waiting for YouTube to process the video: 5 minutes of boring rambling, haha. But I did learn a couple new things: I tried multi-camera editing for the first time (however brief), and I realized that I need to buy an optical drive. =P Most importantly, I haven't given up yet. Yay, momentum!

I participated in my first hackathon this weekend for the National Day of Civic Hacking, and somehow our team won 2 of the prizes! It was really fun, and I'm sad that it's over. The sense of community and camaraderie developed within our team was really something special. :)

Here's our entry:
Walk, bus, bike, or carpool to an event with friends for a healthier, cheaper, and more fun commute!

"Ben Morfitt wrote a symphonic piece, performed all the parts, and composited it all together into this Orchestra of Ben Morfitts."

"I've never tried conducting before, so I'm not 100% sure what I'm doing, I just watched a load of videos of conductors and tried to do something similar to them," he says.

The Octobass: 12-foot instrument of awesomeness!

"The 12-foot tall Octobass plays so low, it's lowest string when played fully open is barely in the human hearing registry. To play it, a musician must stand on a stool and use leavers to fret the notes. It resides at the new Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix, Arizona, and is the only one in North America."
