Pretending to be a teacher is FUN!
I can't say this enough: don't wait until you're an expert to start teaching others!

You see, I started a meetup group ( and ran our first workshop this weekend! What a rush! I've never taught a class or anything remotely close to it before, and because I'm completely crazy, I decided to organize and run a computer programming workshop for 35 people! I thought it would be a disaster, but it far exceeded everyone's (admittedly low) expectations, including my own. :)

Except for a couple example links and the overall idea (building a Battleship game with JavaScript), I made everything up on the fly. This was totally unplanned. Organized chaos. I had everyone group-Googling the answers to their own questions as we went along, and I learned right along with them. Win-win! (I'm getting the most out of it, though; I'm learning about programming, public speaking, socializing, teaching, and event planning all at once!)

That said, even though some people thrived on the open-ended nature of this learning experiment, others were definitely a bit lost. I have a lot to learn about learning -- and especially about teaching.

So, to all my genius Google+ friends: got any advice for a newbie? :)

+T. Pascal It actually wasn't that much work! Since I made most of it up on the fly, lol. The work was mostly just in dealing with my social anxiety and fear of public speaking

Google Voice just got native MMS support!

I've been waiting for this for five years! Finally!
Good news, GV users! You can now stay in touch via MMS with Verizon Wireless users. Google Voice now supports MMS messaging with of all major carriers in the US and Canada.

Along with this announcement, we are also adding native MMS support for photo messaging to Google Voice. If you opt in to Google Voice in Hangouts, you can now attach photos to any SMS message and it will be delivered as a native MMS (instead of SMS with a link). Support for group messaging via MMS will be enabled in a future update.

It's too late for me to whip up a costume now, but maybe next year. This photo is from 1942 by David Bransby. Now in the Library of Congress:

Dancing Working at Pasadena City Hall

Here's me holding the poster I designed for today's event. (Poster: It's pretty cool to see something I made printed as a big poster and used for an actual thing for the first time! :) I even did a tiny bit of public speaking in front of 40 people today. It was great practice!

A fun example of machine learning: computing the optimal search strategy for finding Waldo!

Bayesian methods are known to work very well in this kind of problems- A set of pixels with Waldo would have some properties. By simple clustering methods the data can also be pruned for other methods.

Dawn scorching the clouds

As some of you know, I'm trying to become a morning person. (Let me know if you ever want to join my almost-daily G+ hangouts at 6am PDT!) It's hard to be a morning person on the weekend, but watching the sunrise while sipping my tea is sometimes worth it. :) #FiveDayBlackAndWhiteChallenge  day 3 -- photo from yesterday.

Seeing the sunrise can be fantastic. The trick is in being able to decide if you want to ,or don't  want to see it.

Bubbles + smell-o-vision. Why not?
So this just made my day. Introducing #Sensabubble . A machine made by Computer Science department at Bristol University that produces magical little bubbles with unique smells and colours using projection mapping. Now you can get notified that you have a new G+ message with say a red bubble which smells like roses. Hats off for a project that attempts to use something more than just sight and sound to enhance your experience. I am also particularly happy that this piece of awesome came from my Computer Science department back in the day!
