RESPONSE TO LISA IRBY'S QUESTION ABOUT NICHE OR BROAD
I want to do BOTH, no question. As you already know I WANT a SOCIAL NETWORK (yes, I said it, I didn't stutter) NOT blog in my niche which is wildly popular online and I experienced a very high rate of demand. Any advertising on my social network will be VERY laser targeted to this specific niche group. I learned my lesson. The main thing I feel I needed to do within this niche is learn about more effective monetization methods. PPC and other traditional ad marketing campaigns were completely USELESS yet I had an undeniable measurable steady flow of traffic to my niche sites. In fact, one thing I definitely plan to change, is NOT seek PPC or PPA options but seek out more pay per impressions opportunities. In general, they may earn less than pay per click/commissions but at least I will be able to generate some kind of revenue from my traffic passively without totally losing out because nobody would click on ads. I'm sure YouTube is making a killing off those True View ads in their videos. I really want my social network more as a means to socialize with like minded individuals rather than rely on it to be my sole income stream which frustrated me a lot most of time, as I found it difficult to get approved for mainstream ad networks like Adsense. I would tear my hair out trying to figure out how a page with 150,000 hits didn't generate one ad click. I couldn't get a single person out of 2,000 members to click on NOTHING (well at least not ads) because they WERE clicking on something else a whole lot, THE CONTENT! That was a BIG problem as far as earning money from PPC/PPA campaigns. I don't want the kind of restrictions that comes inherent in dealing with Google for my niche site. I feel very much so that I can do a waaaay better job of marketing to my niche than Google. I can and actually proved that to be true with my niche on Facebook who wanted to charge me for Likes on my Fan Page. Why should I do that when I was excelling at promoting myself WITHOUT Facebook's phoney "Boost Post" scam.
In fact, it was from YOU I learned that you can make your own deals independent of Google/Adsense and deal direct with the advertisers. Were it not for you, I would have never known that I could actually approach people individually within my niche for advertising opportunities INSTEAD of trying to become something I will never be. . . mainstream. . . or what Google approves of. I have no respect for them and don't care if never get their approval. I never want to run my websites based on Google love, no matter how easy it is to get traffic from them. My niche will NEVER be mainstream, therefore, I don't plan on jumping through all kinds of hoops to please Google. If I make any money from it ever well that is just the icing on the cake. I sure am NOT counting on Google's approval for it tho.
However, I also do indeed want a broader topic than my niche because like you Lisa, I possess a personal knowledge base that is NOT related to my niche and beyond the scope of it. The only thing natural hair and website creating have in common is YOU! LOL That's pretty much the same thing with me. If anything, I may be able to easily advertise my broader website on the niche site but that's about all they will have in common. Rarely will the two cross paths beyond just mentioning it or advertising it on my niche site. I very much need the broader site relating to technology because for one thing, its already saturated which is a GOOD thing for what I want to do, however, it NEEDS to be broad for the exact opposite reason my niche site has not been able to overcome yet. It needs to be EASILY able to qualify for Adsense or other mainstream adnetworks. Technology is far less risque than my niche and far more suitable for mainstream ads.
I plan to tap into my personal knowledge base which is expansive and broad. I'm confident I will be able to generate plenty of content that's unique and different than my competitors as I will be speaking from a UNIQUE point of view . . . MINE. . as in, "been there, done that" similar to what you have going here with 2Create a website. It won't be very entertaining or funny like the examples you mentioned in your podcast, but definitely have no fear or doubt that it WILL BE USEFUL. People tell me all the time how useful the information I share was to them.
In fact, I found myself many times feeling like I have valuable information to offer related to your area of focus but never quite knew how it would fit without being competitive or downright tacky. For example, its clear, you have a personal preference for WordPress. Well I have an above average user knowledge base of a multitude of CMS programs, I came to your blog KNOWING WordPress was not the only one out there, a fact that may not be obvious to a newbie.
My user knowledge spans 30 years which there is plenty I can share that are NOT WordPress related. I'm sure I may be able to hone in on a specific niche within the broader scope of technology eventually as I begin to develop it. As of yet, tho, I have not determined what that will be. I do have somewhat of an ideal of what my narrower niche will be under the umbrella of technology, however, I have no ideal it's potential for earning income as it will very likely be geared more toward non-profit endeavors. To date, I have not done any research on it, I just know I NEED to do it.
