My latest for Inc. on how Albuquerque, New Mexico, and other cities and government agencies are turning to open data and tech to alleviate the costly burden on of FOIA requests for governments.
Inc.com
The Freedom of Information Act is supposed to make governments more transparent, but some companies are using it to make big profits.

My latest on Inc: "The most effective founders and CEO's understand that no one else on their team or within their network is there to serve as a personal rolodex or wikipedia, and they fiercely protect the time and focus of the rest of their team."

If you are quick to give up and ask someone else when you don't know an answer, you may be sabotaging your own success.

Does your city provide these six types of apps?
Inc.com
Almost 70% of us now own a smart phone, and these six apps can make it easier to interact with our cities.

Peter Pirnejad, the Development Director of Palo Alto, California, says it was about five years ago that he noticed an uptick of new CIO and CDO positions in cities - just one of the indicators that more cities are focusing on civic tech and smart city innovations to address social and urban problems. But where will the new business leaders come from to create, deploy and support these innovations? The University of Chicago has launched a unique course to help do just that. It's a privilege to have been invited to be a part of it, and it's exciting to imagine what improvements might come to our cities because of it.

While other MBA programs offer courses in entrepreneurship, one university is leading the way in training the next generation of founders who want to save our cities.

If 1 in 3 people with autism and an above average IQ will NEVER hold down a job, how do some of our misfits and rebels like Richard Branson and Elon Musk manage to become transformational leaders?

My thoughts on why flexible, scalable platforms and grids are vital for the next stage of Smart Cities growth.
While we can't yet ask someone to beam us up, in many ways the city of the future is already here.

Who steals a wheelchair? Really hoping whoever it was sees this and has a heart. This is my brother-in-law, and that chair was specially made to allow him to get around his farm.
For many who are confined to a wheelchair, even the smallest bit of freedom is invaluable. But for a Valencia County man, that freedom was taken from him after his all-terrain wheelchair was stolen.

Having been a stay-at-home mom for fifteen years before launching a company, I have worn all of the motherhood hats and can confirm that absolutely none of them are easy.
Raising children while building a company is easier when we remember these three things.

Wow - second-highest read article on Inc last Monday and 8.8k shares by Sunday. Did not expect that, but I'm glad that others can resonate with what I learned from Taylor Swift's acceptance speech.
When Taylor Swift delivered her second acceptance speech of the night at the 2016 Grammy Awards, her words became required listening for every CEO, founder, and leader on how to turn controversy into a win.
