Ozy recently published an article featuring me on "The Intersection of Tech and Church". Sanjena Sathian wrote the article based on interviews with me over a period of a few weeks. Most of the interviews were done by phone, but there were a couple done in writing by email -- mostly fact checking. If you enjoyed the article, as I did, you might be interested in taking a look at the written interviews. Here they are. The bold quoted portions are fr...

Some have asked for my opinion on the clarifying comments shared last night by Elder Christofferson (who happens to be one of my favorite LDS general authorities). In particular, Christofferson commented that the new policies were not intended to prevent anyone from receiving blessings in a general sense, but only from receiving the "name and blessing" ritual specifically. His reasoning was that this ritual sets off some bureaucratic processes that Church leaders feel are inappropriate for children of gays.

Unfortunately, this does not resolve my concerns with the new policies. The "name and blessing" ritual is not an essential ritual of Mormonism, and Mormonism quite intentionally has no essential rituals for persons that do not have moral agency. Withholding the "name and blessing" ritual from those who desire it is still withholding a blessing. It still does not reflect my understanding of Christianity or Mormonism. It still appears to be exactly what my ancestor, George Q Cannon, criticized as an inappropriate approach to blessings. If we have bureaucratic problems, we should change the bureaucratic processes rather than access to blessings. There is no doctrine that prevents us from changing the bureaucratic processes. There is much doctrine that mandates compassion, as exemplified by unimpeded blessing of all who desire it.
I learned this morning that leadership of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the largest Mormon denomination and that in which I am a member) has chosen to prohibit the Church from baptizing or blessing minor children of gays, and to require adult children of married gays to disavow their parents' marriage before the Church may baptize them. While I love and support the Church and its leaders, I disagree with these new policies. Her...

I'll add that I also have concerns with the notion that bureaucratic processes are justified for all children except those of gays and polygamists. In other words, children of criminals can receive the "name and blessing" ritual that kick off the bureaucratic processes, but children of gays and polygamists cannot. In all soberness, that is remarkably insulting.

Nootropics are drugs, supplements, and foods that improve mental function. Sometimes people refer to them as smart drugs. They facilitate desired mental functions like memory and focus, and reduce undesired mental states like stress and depression. I've been researching and experimenting with them for years. And I've found that most don't seem to do much more than make expensive urine. But there are exceptions. Below is my list of nootropics that...

Hi David.

You might like these text comparisons of Shakespeare and Chaucer. They show that explicit syntactical influence of Chaucer on Shakespeare seems to have been fairly low.

Our generation is not the first to question the compatibility of religion and science, and our generation would not be the first to reconcile the two. History provides innumerable examples, including that of Christianity, which has repeatedly challenged and embraced science, as the two have evolved together, even affecting each other in a feedback loop. You and I begin with desires, physical and spiritual, that we seek to fulfill as the purpose of our respective lives. To the extent that we fulfill these desires, we experience joy. To the extent that our desires conflict, within ourselves or between each other, we experience misery. We may each extend love to each other and reflectively on ourselves. As that love works on us, moving us to reconcile our desires, we experience greater joy. To the ...

The Church has shared additional clarification: https://www.lds.org/pages/church-handbook-changes?cid=HP_WE_11-11-2015_dPFD_fCNWS_xLIDyL1-A_&lang=eng

The additional clarification is nice insofar as it narrows the scope of applicability. However, it still does not fully resolve my concerns. The new policies, even interpreted in light of the latest clarification, withhold naming blessings and baptisms from children of gay persons that desire those rituals. It targets them exceptionally (along with children of polygamists) among the many kinds of parents with whom Church leaders have moral disagreements. Other exceptions are based on geography and not moral disagreements.

I imagine that Church leaders may be thinking that moral disagreements related to marriage are the hardest for children to deal with. I know of no evidence to support that. Moreover, hard or not, participation in Church activities is apparently still welcome. Why wouldn't the teachings of the Church be harder on the children of gay persons than the rituals of the Church, particularly when Church leaders are teaching that the rituals should be withheld?

It would be more consistent with professed concerns for children of gay persons if the Church were to prevent those children from attending Church activities generally. But of course that would be wrong too.
