In recent months when I checked my Google Analytics I have been taken aback by the impressive amount of traffic I was getting from StumbleUpon, even though I wasn’t really doing much to leverage it.

It made me realize that the content curation website can still be an amazing source of traffic and that I had to start leveraging it more.

As a business owner, I’ve found it very difficult to deal with unhappy customers, particularly in the beginning – I was tempted to take it much too personally, and I didn’t realise how a differing opinion doesn’t mean the entire relationship will be completely destroyed.

It took me a while, and a thicker skin to truly understand what Bill Gates meant when he said, “Your most unhappy customers are your greatest source of learning.”

I think this is great advice for any business owner, no matter if they deal with other businesses, or individual customers, or whether they sell products or services. It’s essentially another take on “learn from your mistakes”, combined with “the customer is always right”, tailored to business owners, and very good advice in my experience.

One of the things you have to accept if you want to sell a product or service is that you are going to make mistakes. And the next thing you have to accept is that your customers won’t always agree with you, and that they will sometimes want something different than what you’re offering.

Once you acknowledge this, you have to look at these disagreements as opportunities – and learn from them.

As an entrepreneur, it’s easy to think that you know better than the customer (only when they disagree with you though!). But after all, you have to remember that the product or service you’re offering is not meant for you – it’s meant for the customer, so if he or she isn’t pleased with it, it’s your job to find out why that is and make the necessary changes.

We all make mistakes, and especially as a business owner you’re bound to make them over and over. But if you learn from these mistakes, and use them to better your offering, than you’ll be able to grow your business. It’s those who don’t listen to negative feedback that will eventually fail.

I believe it’s great business practice to ask your customers for feedback, particularly of the negative variety. When you get amazing feedback, use it to motivate yourself and share it with the world. When you get negative comments, use them to improve your business – whether it’s the actual product or service, the location where you sell it, the way you sell it, or whatever else your customer is displeased with.

Remember that negative feedback is not something personal, and you shouldn’t take it that way. In fact, negative feedback = opportunities.
