This week is World Autism Awareness Week, the UK’s biggest ever awareness raising campaign about Autism organised by the National Autistic Society.
This year’s campaign is called Too Much Information and aims to inform ordinary people who don’t know much about autism or how overwhelming the world can be for an autistic child or adult.
Many people have heard of autism but there is still a lack of awareness about how it affects the individual day to day, from what can make them feel anxious, how difficult they find social situations and communication to being overwhelmed when they are in highly stimulating environments such as shopping centres where there is lots of noise, bright lights and other people.

National Nurses’ Day takes place on 12th May each year, the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth. It’s a chance to celebrate and recognise the difference the 690,000 nurses in the UK make each and every day.

At Lighthouse Healthcare we wanted to thank and recognise every member of staff that works in our services, not just the nurses on National Nurses Day.

Every single member of staff at Lighthouse works hard in providing a high standard of care for our service users and they all make a difference to the lives of the individuals we support on a daily basis.

To celebrate and to say thank you we delivered cakes to each of our specialist learning disability and mental health services for all of the staff to enjoy on National Nurses Day 12th May.

Happy National Nurses Day!!

Tuesday March 8th 2016 is International Women’s Day and with women up to 40% more likely than men to develop mental health conditions we thought it important to highlight the specialist female mental health care Lighthouse Healthcare provides at; Yr Hafan in Welshpool and Ballington House in Leek, along with the women that manage these services.

The women we support often have complex mental health and associated conditions including; Personality Disorder (not necessarily formally diagnosed), Substance misuse and Learning disability. Our empathic and understanding approach allows us to care for women who may have had histories of trauma, abuse and self-harm.

Our newly developed Enhanced Social Care Services

Over the last few years at Lighthouse Healthcare we have developed significantly in response to Transforming Care priorities around ensuring people are cared for in the least restrictive setting possible and live ordinary lives in the community.

We have creatively met the priorities identified in Building the Right Support (October 2015) around resettling people who have been in inpatient care for a long period of time and also the need for services which are able to provide a period of intensive support to prevent unnecessary hospital admissions by developing our new Enhanced Social Care services to support individuals with significantly complex and challenging needs.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year on behalf of everyone at Lighthouse Healthcare

We have chosen to donate to charity this year instead of sending out printed Christmas cards. We will make a donation in lieu of cards to the National Autistic Society  a UK charity providing information and support for people with autism and their families.
The picture on our Christmas email greeting above was created by one of our service users at Healthlinc House in Welton, Lincolnshire which features alongside many other pieces of original artwork by service users in the 2016 Lighthouse Healthcare calendar.
The individual who drew this picture was really pleased when asked if we could use it as part of our Christmas communications too!
