I advocate tablets for everyone, but especially those that help children with autism have a voice.

Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), was dancing for a cause during Autism Awareness Month. Adults served by DDI partnered up with students of Vic D'Amore's American Studio of Performing Arts to produce "Dancing for Autism" April 20th at the Kings Park High School Auditorium. Over $3,000 was raised to benefit DDI.

I like the effort but I would also like to educate the author. The use of the phrase "autistic people" makes me uncomfortable. No one should be defined by their disorder. They are people with autism.
As an experienced firefighter and a devoted father to an autistic son, Bill Cannata is combining the two worlds he knows so well to help protect others. Being in a fire can be confusing and overwhelmi...

I think I understand what you mean. I have been involved in may conversations within the Autism community (I am counted in that group if Autistics) concerning person first language. In the general disability community it is correct to use person first language for the reasons that you stated. In the Autistic community we see Autism as a strong part of our identity. Here is an blog post that might help explain... http://autismmythbusters.com/general-public/autistic-vs-people-with-autism/jim-sinclair-why-i-dislike-person-first-language/
Thanks for the dialogue. I hope I didnt come off too harsh.

We received this message from the Alliance of Long Island Agencies (ALIA) who express disappointment at the poor reaction to the Syracuse Post Standard petition (currently at 4,924 signatures). Please see if you can pass the word to as many members of the DD community as you can to sign this petition so we can show our strength in numbers, prior to the projected January 21 release date of the NYS 2014-2015 Budget / Executive Version :

If you have signed the online petition asking the Governor not to propose or support cuts in funding to supports and services for people with developmental disabilities, THANK YOU! If you have not, please click on the link below and do it today, then send this to everyone you know and ask them to add their names. It takes less than a minute.

We need to illustrate that people with disabilities, their families and those who support them are united in supporting this message. We have hundreds of thousands of people across the state who support our goal of no more cuts, yet fewer than 5,000 people have taken less than a minute to join in and support this effort. We can do much better than that. Please help spread the word.
