When do people share? Comparing Instagram activity in six global cities
120,000 images from six global cities organized by average hue (distance to the center). The angle of each image is the day/time it was shared. All images use their local times (i.e. we keep offsets between the time zones). Because the temporal patterns for...

From Software Takes Command to cultural analytics

https://www.facebook.com/notes/lev-manovich/from-software-takes-command-to-cultural-analytics/10152173194708456

What happens to the idea of separate artistic mediums in software culture? This for me is the key question of my book "Software Takes Command" (2013.

I make parallels with biological evolution, suggesting that digital media leads to many thousands of "media species" each at least slightly different from the rest. So this is my proposal of how to replace standard "artistic mediums" concept.

Instead of having a small number of categories each with its defining characteristics and a range of variations ("photography, "painting," "installation," etc), I suggest that in digital culture we have "projects" made from a larger number of small building blocks (interface conventions, pieces of code, media types such as images, video, data formats, etc.). Designers, artists and programmers select from these blocks and combine the selected elements in many ways - some typical and some unique.

Instead of a small number of distinct artistic mediums, I suggest that we now have a single "meta-medium" that contains these blocks and very larger number of "media species."

Its a combinatorial (like Lego) model, instead of categories model (where some works are at the center of a category and others are on the margins, but still inside the category) model.

So what is at stake here is our understanding of contemporary cultures. Although this book (first draft was completed and posted online in 2007) does not directly engage with my "cultural analytics" research (which starts also in 2007), its theoretical conclusion directly points to use of computers to analyze massive collections of cultural artifacts. If we want to understand what species we have in the field of (for example) motion graphics, we need to analyze hundreds of thousands of examples. Only then we can reliably say what elements they use, how these are combined, which combinations are more popular and which are more rare. And this can be only done efficiently with computers.
What happens to the idea of separate artistic mediums in software culture? This for me is the key question of my whole book. I make parallels with biological evolution, suggesting that digital media leads to many thousands of "media species" each at least slightly different from the rest.
