Neat take on fideo via Simpy Recipes -- it calls for tomatillos instead of tomatoes, plus goat cheese and chorizo.

Love this spicy cranberry sauce idea, particularly as a sandwich spread for leftovers the next day. Or with a thick slice of Brie!

Finally, a study confirms what I've always thought -- Mexican street food isn't as bad for your health as you think it is.

My article on Mexico City in today's denver post travel:
MEXICO CITY — I adjust my seat post and swing my leg over my cruiser bicycle on a side street in the Centro district, looking nervously at the cars and taxis clogging the lane to my left.

Still figuring out what I'm making for breakfast on tomorrow (grits and biscuits? pancakes and bacon?) and now there's a new contender to the list: migas with black-eyed peas and bacon.

Migas for breakfast are welcome anytime, but I have especially fond memories of eating them with friends in Austin as our first meal of the New Year. When I was younger, no matter where I happened to be living in Texas, it always seemed that I ended up in Austin for New Year's Eve.

I've never made ate, the Mexican fruit paste, from scratch, but this article sure makes me want to try. Preferably with quince smuggled from Northern Mexico.

I'm going to let you in on a little secret: northern Mexican food consists of more than just carne asada...

I'm personally mildly annoyed by the "because [blank]" construction, but there are so many fun turns of phrase in this story. Great read.

A delightful piece on the evolution of the word because. Because, Internet. I agree with the point about Spanish: "A comment on the blog Language Log also mentions the intriguing, though likely unrelated, fact that in Spanish, "because" (porque) and "why" (¿por qué?) are close to synonymous." It makes sense that words would morph toward a middle meaning somewhere between everyone's first and second languages. So, because ESL.
Linguists are recognizing the delightful evolution of the word "because."

I've always wanted to Be a Writer too, although I didn't have quite this experience. Loved this essay by Lauren Quinn about adjusting your dreams as you get older.

In real life Mexico City, you rarely see women making tacos al pastor. Snapped up this little taquera at Mercado de Medellín yesterday.
