I read it again today, myself :) I loved it, but this review aces what I have to say as the author!
A Great Way to Introduce Your Child To Angels!
This is a sweet, yet truly impactful story you should read to or with your young children as you embark on imparting spirituality into their lives.
The author, Lesley Fletcher, weaves her special message through Johnny, a young child who already speaks to an angel on a daily basis. I especially liked this tact. It was as if nothing was new for a child to speak with an angel, so any child reading it will feel ‘okay’ if he or she also does this, or is first being introduced to the subject of angels.
One way the story flows especially well is that, although Johnny speaks literally, Angel speaks in a rhyming, sing-song, easy-flowing way which lands easily on a child’s ear.
The illustrations in “Hey Angel” are colorful and whimsical and mature a bit as the story progresses.
Spirituality and angels is a tough enough subject to grasp as adults; however, Ms. Fletcher shows acute adeptness in having Johnny’s angel tell him that she’s where he can ‘physically’ place her first, i.e., she’s on his knee, his thumb, his head and so on. In a child’s mind’s eye, if they can picture seeing an invisible entity first in ‘easy’ places, then all the more easy it will be to make the transcendental jump and have a child internalize the idea in his/her heart.
What I love most about this book is that Ms. Fletcher answers specific questions at the end of the story that a child might have about Angel; furthermore, she invites her readers to contact her via email with any specific questions they may have. I have not seen this before and think it a perfect, personal feature to offer young readers.
What a comforting feeling it is to know early on that one is never alone, and this is why I would highly recommend “Hey Angel” to families everywhere.
