Linnaeus: The 18th century superstar who put Sweden on the map.

The great botanist, Carl Linnaeus, is to Uppsala what Mozart is to Salzburg or Shakespeare is to Stratford-on-Avon. Take a day trip from Stockholm and walk in the footsteps of this fascinating Scandinavian, scientific genius. Every year many tourists, both scientists and laymen, come here to pay tribute to the lad from a humble family Småland who went on to become a great superstar of 18th century science.

After studying medicine in the Netherlands, Linnaeus eventually became a professor at Uppsala University and it is here that he did the work which laid the foundation for modern taxonomy.

The summer, when the flowers are in bloom, is the time to come. Not least because the Linnaeus museums open their doors on May 1st and close at the end of September. (Check the opening hours when planning your visit.)

Your first stop will probably be the Linnaeus Museum: the great scientist’s town home where he lived with his wife and family. Here you can see his medicine cabinet, insect box and other objects connected to his life and travels. Adjacent to the house is a Linnaean Garden, laid out just as it would have been in his lifetime. Every year, on the 23rd May (his birthday), there is a Linnaeus Garden Party here, a full day of celebration. People dress up in 18th century costumes, there is live music and dancing and even a market of for plants, flowers and local produce.

Carl Linnaeus – the Flower Power King
Your next stop will probably be the University Botanical Gardens which is a stone’s throw from the city centre by the Uppsala Castle. Even if you are not interested in botany, the serene atmosphere will enchant you and it is a gorgeous place for a picnic in the summer. There are over 9,000 species on display in these exquisite Gustavian gardens and as well as an Orangery and a Tropical Rainforest, there is also a café. A fitting homage to the Flower Power King.

It will take a little longer to reach Linnaeus’s country farm at Hammarby, which is a few kilometers out of town. But it is worth the effort. Every modern Swede aspires to have a summer cottage and the great professor was no exception. The house is perfectly preserved and contains many of his personal belongings. There are excellent guided tours and afterwards you can enjoy a coffee and cake in the orchard café and explore the gardens.

A highlight of your Swedish vacation
You can quite literally follow in the master’s footsteps throughout Uppsala and take a stroll along the Linnaeus Nature Trails that he used to walk when teaching with his students. Wise teacher that he was, in the summer the great man enjoyed moving his teaching outdoors and making use of the natural surroundings. The trails will lead you into the beauty of the Uppland countryside. There are eight Linnaeus trails, four of which are aimed specifically at children.

“Wonder at everything, even the most everyday things”. Linnaeus’s life and thoughts will stay with you, long after your Scandinavian vacation is over.

“Groovy People,” is Lynne’s take on the Philly Soul finger-popper from `76 penned by legendary team Kenny Gamble & Leon Huff for the late, great Lou Rawls. Making the song more her own, Lynne takes the groove in a decidedly more Motown direction, even using Diana Ross’ background singers Valerie Pinkston, Lamont Van Hook and Fred White. She also puts a deeper spin on that pesky term “groovy.” Music video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=FwrH9gzes5c

Her rendition of “Groovy People” affirms the timeless importance of knowing who your real friends are and bundling yourself in their abundance of love.

If you want a real treat this month make your way to Spaghettini's Jazz Club in Seal Beach, CA to hear Rayford Griffin performing music from his newly released album titled 'Reflections of Brownie' (a Tribute to his uncle CLIFFORD BROWN) on Saturday, March 26, 2016. Show begins at 8:00 p.m.

Playing with Rayford will be Dontae Winslow - Trumpet, Kieth McKelly - Saxophone, Hans Zermuehlen - Keyboards and Sekou Bunch - Bass.

This amazing percussionist, composer and producer has roots that extend back to the most revolutionary era of jazz – be bop – thanks to his uncle: the great trumpeter/composer Clifford Brown. In that spirit, Rayford just completed "Reflections of Brownie" – his second album as a leader and his first since 2003’s Rebirth of the Cool

Rayford Griffin has been internationally respected as among the most inventive, volcanic and versatile drummers in music, having amassed stellar credits with virtuosos ranging from Jean-Luc Ponty and The Stanley Clarke Band, George Duke, to Dave Koz, Anita Baker and Michael Jackson to name a few.
