‘Twas a dangerous cliff, as they freely confessed,
Though to walk near its crest was so pleasant;
But over its terrible edge there had slipped
A duke and full many a peasant.
So the people said something would have to be done,
But their projects did not at all tally;
Some said, "Put a fence ’round the edge of the cliff,"
Some, "An ambulance down in the valley."

But the cry for the ambulance carried the day,
For it spread through the neighboring city;
A fence may be useful or not, it is true,
But each heart became full of pity
For those who slipped over the dangerous cliff;
And the dwellers in highway and alley
Gave pounds and gave pence, not to put up a fence,
But an ambulance down in the valley.

"For the cliff is all right, if you’re careful," they said,
"And, if folks even slip and are dropping,
It isn’t the slipping that hurts them so much
As the shock down below when they’re stopping."
So day after day, as these mishaps occurred,
Quick forth would those rescuers sally
To pick up the victims who fell off the cliff,
With their ambulance down in the valley.

Then an old sage remarked: "It’s a marvel to me
That people give far more attention
To repairing results than to stopping the cause,
When they’d much better aim at prevention.
Let us stop at its source all this mischief," cried he,
"Come, neighbors and friends, let us rally;
If the cliff we will fence, we might almost dispense
With the ambulance down in the valley."

"Oh he’s a fanatic," the others rejoined,
"Dispense with the ambulance? Never!
He’d dispense with all charities, too, if he could;
No! No! We’ll support them forever.
Aren’t we picking up folks just as fast as they fall?
And shall this man dictate to us? Shall he?
Why should people of sense stop to put up a fence,
While the ambulance works in the valley?"

But the sensible few, who are practical too,
Will not bear with such nonsense much longer;
They believe that prevention is better than cure,
And their party will soon be the stronger.
Encourage them then, with your purse, voice, and pen,
And while other philanthropists dally,
They will scorn all pretense, and put up a stout fence
On the cliff that hangs over the valley.

Better guide well the young than reclaim them when old,
For the voice of true wisdom is calling.
"To rescue the fallen is good, but ’tis best
To prevent other people from falling."
Better close up the source of temptation and crime
Than deliver from dungeon or galley;
Better put a strong fence ’round the top of the cliff
Than an ambulance down in the valley.

~Joseph Malins, 1895

Hey people, if you have a moment please pop over to Nola.com and vote for Theo's as the best pizza in New Orleans. My sister is a manager there, but in all honesty I wouldn't plug it if I didn't genuinely believe it's the best. So go vote if you can!

The HP cons I attend/help run skew 80-90% female attendance. It is interesting to contrast that to a standard SF con.

Well I had a drink with a friend of mine
a week ago today
we were celebrating a month and a half
too late St. Paddy's Day
well I bought 'im a round and he bought me a round
and the bouncer bought us anudder
what's an Irish boy from a good family
doing in the gutter

Well we looked at each other and had to laugh
as we lay there in our stink
well I woulda cried if I woulda thought
but every time I thought I'd drink
and if his poor old gray-haired ma'd
see us there she woulda shuddered
what's an Irish boy from a good family
doing in the gutter

Well my Irish friend he liked to surf
but me I couldn't swim
well he said that he could teach me how
and I said I trusted him
he swore he'd never let me drown
he loved me like a brudder
what's an Irish boy from a good family
doing in the gutter

Well sure enough I drowned
and I wound up at the pearly gates
where St. Peter said, "You're drunk as
hell and son you shoulda ate"
so he sent me back down to get a bite
but instead I bought anudder
what's an Irish boy from a good family
doing in the gutter

I've finally gotten around to watching it.  I pretty much agree, it certainly wasn't good, but under the constraints they had, it was much better than it could have been.

Damn.

James Horner did the music for a shit-ton of great movies, obviously, but my favorite is his amazing score for Aliens. "Bishop's Countdown" still stands as one of the most bone-chillingly effective musical backdrops to a climactic action scene scene ever written, in my opinion.

RIP, Mr. Horner. You did good work.
James Horner, the consummate film composer known for his heart-tugging scores for Field of Dreams, Braveheart and Titanic, for which he won two Academy Awards, died Monday in a plane crash near Santa Barbara. He was 61.

The incomparable Amy reviews Michael Livingston's upcoming first novel!

Michael, as some of you may recall, is the Citadel professor who gave that wonderful lecture at JordanCon about Jordan and Tolkien, and I am so pleased he is publishing a book that unites his two passions, history and fantasy. Can't wait to check it out.
Amy Nadel Romanczuk originally shared:

Imagine the timeline of history, stretched out before you. Now imagine that you can reach into that timeline, and grab a chunk of it, say roughly around 44 BCE to 30 BCE. Twist and pull that chunk apart, tease out people, events, landscapes, cultural beliefs, battles, outcomes. Now add in personalities, conversations, conflicts, passion, motivations, and a huge dose of supernatural. Add one expert researcher as author and a fabulously illustrated cover. Do all of the above right, and you've got Shards of Heaven in your hands.

I just finished watching the series finale of Justified , and I found myself choked up at the final scene. For the scene in itself, yes, but more just at the knowledge that such a great show was ending. I love that it ended on its own terms, but I'm still very sad to see it go.

I have not often seen its equal on network TV, or anywhere for that matter, and it's sad that the anti-South and anti-Western prejudice of modern Hollywood and the general viewing public kept this show from getting the recognition it deserved. It's one of only two television shows I've seen (The other is The Wire) that I would describe as downright Shakespearean in scope, in depth, in cleverness, in insight, and in strange violent poetry. Its cast was stellar, its writing was better, and it was a treat to watch from start to finish.

Here's to you, Justified. You done good.

I'm telling you guys right now, if you aren't watching Agent Carter you are seriously missing out. The last episode was straight-up chilling, and I don't say that lightly.

The scene....

SPOILERS

with Dottie monkey-swinging/gamboling down the entire staircase was worth the entire season. That actress is a true gem - she can come across so wholesome and gee-willickers, but then turn to cray-cray in a pico-second, although the scary Russian dirge that is her leitmotif helps.
