Okay, it's a Twitter but it beautifully captures the change to cooler weather after the 5th worst Australian summer on record. The worst was two years ago. http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/current/season/aus/summary.shtml While pockmarked by unusually severe storms, it was spared from bad bushfires. We are learning to cope with climate-change.

Words fail, more silly extrapolations from Hockey's Intergenerational Report. The document says more about the LNP cynical outlook and lack of imagination than it does about Australia's future prospects.
Did you realise that provided current policy settings remain unchanged, in 2055 the official Reserve Bank cash rate will be minus four per cent and housing finance will be free? That’s right: you’ll be able to borrow as much as you like, and not have to worry about interest repayments. In fact, in a competitive market, some lenders may actually pay you to borrow. That’s a projection I knocked up in 20 minutes using Reserve Bank interest data from...

Meditative walk around Victoria Point gave birth to this mobile phone series. A little downbeat: doesn't say particularly nice things about the current feel of our wide brown land but I play it as I see it.

Redland Bay warm autumn
The seasonal changes in South East Queensland are subtle. The heat of the day still burns but the wind is less fierce. The late afternoon casts longer, cooler shadows but the light is still harsh. More often than not the water mirrors the fishing boats. The...

All very nice but I see no questioning here of the need to ship goods globally rather than produce locally or that we may be overconsuming or that we are fixated by growing populations

Ah, to be in Canberra now that Autumn is here.  It may be known for being the political epicentre of Australia but it has quietly become a beautifully liveable and pretty place that its US architect Burley Griffin envisaged.
The 10-day Enlighten light festival wraps up in Canberra, with both amateur and professional photographers out in force to capture the event.

The previous Australian Intergenerational report had 84 mentions of climate change. The one released yesterday downplays the threat and mentions it only eleven times.
The year was 1975. Gough Whitlam was still the Prime Minister of Australia, although his increasingly scandal-prone government was fighting Senate obstruction. The economy was sickly, inflation having galloped in after the 1974 oil shock. Australia in 1975 looked radically different. There were no laptops or smart phones, and no internet that linked them in a seamless web of constant communication. Australian cities were smaller and less crowded,...

Yes it has French style, yes, it is a pleasant busy boulevard location and yes it has cheerful service...but no, the food is mean, overseasoned and shockingly overpriced.

Probably one of the most pleasant outlooks of any cafe on the islands picking up the light north-easters across the bay and just the right amount of sunlight in both winter and summer. Cheerful and reasonably quick service even when quite busy. Coffee always better than average because they have all the right procedures in place. Taken over in the late winter of 2014 by well known local couple with a reputation for good business sense--and fun with a program of local musicians providing entertainment.

Detail counts. Service was special even though all I had time for was a cup of coffee. Did leave with two of their cakes though...too good to miss out on.

No matter how good a burger, queuing, crowding, poor service and no space to sit will eventually mean competitors rise. That is what is happening now in Queenstown: be sensible, look elsewhere.

Rambling complex catering for a range of fitness pursuits. Good advice for a generally cheerful staff. Classes include boxing, aerobics, aerobics,,, ah. You know thé rest of the list... Equipment mostly new and well maintained. Membership fees arena competitive. And don't forget the swimming pools.
