New Alzheimer’s treatment fully restores memory function - ScienceAlert

'Australian researchers have come up with a non-invasive ultrasound technology that clears the brain of neurotoxic amyloid plaques - structures that are responsible for memory loss and a decline in cognitive function in Alzheimer’s patients.

[...]

Publishing in Science Translational Medicine, the team describes the technique as using a particular type of ultrasound called a focused therapeutic ultrasound, which non-invasively beams sound waves into the brain tissue. By oscillating super-fast, these sound waves are able to gently open up the blood-brain barrier, which is a layer that protects the brain against bacteria, and stimulate the brain’s microglial cells to activate. Microglila cells are basically waste-removal cells, so they’re able to clear out the toxic beta-amyloid clumps that are responsible for the worst symptoms of Alzheimer’s.

So true, bloatware sucks just like it did(does? ) on Windows PCs. Guess even with the much shorts compression of internet time companies still forget lessons learned.
Overall user engagement on the Galaxy S3 and S4 is high, but Samsung users don't seem to care about the company's own apps.

I had some doubts about WatchDogs delivering to the Hype up until I saw this, now I'm pre-ordering!

#watchdogs #iamagamer
It just wasn't fun. Not all of the time. Not for everyone.

Reposting from my Prop Builders account. Done just in time for DragonCon!  Anyone going this year?

Logan’s Run - Deep Sleep Blaster!

Thank goodness for deadlines (DragonCon)! I finally got back to prop building after a few months diversion and wow I have really missed making things. (Makes me wonder why I took a break) Above is a commissioned prop from the 1976 movie and later TV show called Logan’s Run. I remember the comic book and seeing a couple tv episodes on TV in rerun, back in the day but, the movie was slightly before my time so to speak. None the less, this is a pretty cool prop to make and I’m really happy with how it turned out!

For those interested in the build, this was constructed from various sizes of PVC pipe and of course my favorite, closed cell foam board. The original movie props used a type of gas ignition to blast out a green gas from the venting tubes on the barrel so the barrel was steel or brass tubing, since this is  anon-firing version pvc was quite adequate. :)  The original grip was done in bondo but I used Apoxie Sculpt over Bondo simply because I like being able to sculpt with out wearing gloves.  I really wanted to add some green LED lights to the barrel to get the general effect of the movie prop but due to a tight schedule leading up to Dragon Con I had to skip past that extra feature this time. One of these days I’ll make another with the LEDs in it! maybe.

I grabbed this photo late in the evening and probably could have done better and with more angles but tempus fugit! Hopefully I’ll have time to get a couple more before this thing heads out but,  not sure I’ll get the time.

Some time back I discovered eSports and the explosive growth in Call of Duty as a Pro competitive sport thanks to my oldest son. What started out as something fun to talk about at the dinner table has turned into a web site, and a chance to get to know  a whole group of hard working guys how have taken competitive eSprots to a hole new level. Along with my son and all the guys with codesports.tv we have moved a spreadsheet based stats keeping system into a full REST based stats center for Pro COD!

On Saturday my programming team and I launched the new site, http://codstat.us , just a few hours late but to an enthusiastic welcome by the community! On our first day of launch the Stats team put our pageview traffic to over 15k views in the first day!  I'm really proud of the site, the stats data & media & social team  for all the hard work they have done to really put my baby on the top of the COD community!

If you happen to be interested in  the technical details of the site or in competitive eSports just let me know, I'd love to talk about it and I'll probably post my technical stack rundown before too long. I'm still working most nights on this to finish up the ever expanding todo list.

If you want to follow the stats, the stats team posts on twitter all the time,@CETVStats

Finally wrapped up another project! I was getting tired of the mess on my worktable so I declared this week to be finish it week. 3rd project finished this week!

I love auto awesome!  Though I do advise not looking at it for too long...  (I need a phone tripod it seems)

Last night I finished up my Decent dungeon tiles project!  I think they turned out pretty well.  I need to glue them down onto cork board to match the game tiles but, that's a task for later.

(Actually to make a full set of tiles I need to reproduce the tile set about 20 more times. This only includes 4 sets and 3 doors and treasure chests. It's a good start but I can't make one encounter just yet. I'll be cranking them out while catching up on the Vikings series in the coming weeks, now I'm moving on to finish up the Deadric Sword I started at the same time I started the tiles project!)

I'm an explorer interested in learning about everything, focusing on programming, art, music and hacking stuff.
Introduction
I'm probably best described as a Hacker  of the old school also more commonly called a Maker now that criminals have overridden the hacker meaning. I love to experiment and tweek things as well as make useful software for computers! I'm often in the middle of 3 or more projects and wishing I could get my time-continuum pause button to work so I could squeeze in more.  I'm now pursuing a new direction in my artwork with a  prop making business, check out my posts using #meadowhawk-designs

I've hacked on computers since my parents bought us our first Apple IIe clone and playing with web technologies  web technologies forever.  Coding wise I speak, English, Java, Python, Scala, Groovy JavaScript, html, css, xml, JSON, REST, Open source and a smattering of C++,  Arduino, and some other gobbledygook.

I am currently Hacking away at Raspberry Pi creating a Brewing computer and an remote management system for my mighty Pi army. Check my stream for postings!

I'm also interested in Art, drawing and painting, Steampunk, Zombies, Making cool gadgets and hacking things. Also I'm an avid Mountain Biker.

Other interests: Yoga, Buddhism, photography, books, music and darn near everything else.
