This is the type of history that I find relaxing. It is usually neither revelatory or shocking, nor is meant to be. It is instead a glimpse into what many probably consider the cultural minutiae of the past; that part of the past which is so quiet, so routine, that it evokes in the mind the comparative image of a almost perfectly still pond or pool, effortlessly reflecting the slowly moving clouds in the sky perhaps, and maybe part of a network of limbs in a tree or bush . . .

The painting is from a Dutch artist, and the Dutch seem to have in themselves a greater appreciation of that nearly ineffable quality of quiescence than much of the rest of the developed world, though it is certainly a universal quality, and exists in all cultures.

A Brown Thrasher and an Eastern Towee Sparrow, both taken in Hatchechubbee, Alabama about the same time with a Sony a6500 (these are stills from 4k footage).

I used Cornell Merlin ID app for iPhone to identify these birds. It appears to me to be an amazing app!!

Update: a good friend who is far more experienced in bird identification than I originally thought the “brown thrasher” picture is a “wood thrush” . . . and when I googled images for wood thrush I see what she means!! They look virtually identical!

She says she “isn’t going to put folding money on this one!” So for my eye — and her eye — it is a toss up!
