For versatility, you have a great many options when it comes to floor lamps. You can find lamp designs that direct light upwards (torchiere), shade lamps to direct the light towards the floor, and even lamps that will perform in both modes.

Lamp shades can get up close and personal with hot light bulbs. If you plan on using a 60 watt incandescent bulb in your lamp, choose a shade that will leave a two to three inch clearance on all sides -- more if the lamp or shade literature suggests it.

A lampshade is also called a light shade and was used to first illuminate the streets of Paris, France during the 1700s and 1800s. In fact, the late 17th century use of the lampshade precedes the French "reverberes," which were oil lamps hung above populated streets (which were improved with lampshades later)!

For those of you who enjoy visiting flea markets, garage sales, or other venues of interesting goods, do not let the opportunity to bring home an interesting lamp pass you buy just because the shade is damaged. If the lamp still works, you can just buy a new shade and save money all the way around.

Occasionally, deep cleaning of your lampshades may be needed. If they can be cleaned with water, wipe with a clean cloth dampened with a solution of a mild detergent and water. Wipe off the residue with a clean cloth and plain water and let dry.
