In the summertime we get calls to install a lot of ceiling fans. Most of the time there is no existing wiring or junction box where the customer wants to install a ceiling fan. The most common new installs go in bedrooms. The process of installing a ceiling fan from scratch can differ depending on conditions. If there is already good wiring at the switch in the bedroom it is just a matter of getting a wire from that box to a ceiling fan rated box. Most of the time this requires making holes to get around framing. Installations in drywall ceilings are easier than plaster ceilings. A proper ceiling fan rated junction box should always be used. The pictures show different stages of the install process. For all of your electrical needs contact your licensed Philadelphia Electricians Lauterborn Electric. Lauterborn Electric was called by a new Fishtown resident who just purchased a new electric dryer and the breaker corresponding to it was tripping. They recently moved to the home which was completely renovated including a rewire. When we arrived we opened up the devise and main electrical panel to make sure the wiring was properly connected. We noticed the cord installation lacked a connector, a code violation. We were even more surprised when we opened up the back panel to further evaluate. We found the cord improperly connected causing the issue. One of the home repair big box stores where they purchased the dryer from had one of their unqualified delivery people install the power cord. A power cord install is a simple task if done by a qualified electrician. Luckily no one was shocked or hurt from this sloppy or worse, negligent install. We were recently in Port Richmond due to blinking lights and Comcast disconnecting service due to grounding issues. Upon arrival we were met by over 100 dolls and a note from PECO. A little further investigating led us the main service cable. The neutral was shot coming through the wall and needed to be replaced. PECO ran a temporary wire to the cold water meter to try to restore power with no luck, so later they came back to temporarily restore power with an exposed wire outside. Normally PECO would shut down power and give a customer a certain amount of days to get it fixed. Since this was a very unsafe situation and cable TV was out we came out the following day to put in a new complete service including main service cable, meter and panel. Grounding was also done including a grounding bridge for Comcast to connect to. The pictures show before and after. New construction is the easiest work for an electrician. It is also a highly competitive race to the bottom making margins tighter and tighter. To make up for this, many corners are cut and often we get called afterwards to fix problems created by certain contractors. We were called out to a South Philly multifamily unit to fix blinking lights. The blinking was caused by cheap foreign knock off fixtures that were illegally installed. We replaced most of them with legit fixtures, however we could not replace some in the common hallway. The pictures show very poor decisions made by a previous electrician or builder. In order to power something unknown in the third floor unit, wiring was illegally bootlegged from light to light in the hallway. The bare grounding wire is being used as a current carrying conductor. This is a dangerous wiring method which increases chances of electrical shock. Come back for the conclusion of this job. Lauterborn Electric just finished up the newest of the Ricciardi Brothers Benjamin Moore paint stores in West Chester. Multiple dedicated lines were run in order to power up machines including paint shakers and tinters. Dedicated circuits were also run to the counter area through a power pole along with Cat5 cables for computers and printers. Six barn style lights were installed over the counters and multiple endvcap displays were powered up with back lighting. Power was also installed for a cell phone charging station. . Lauterborn Electric was called out to a recently sold property in the up and coming Point Breeze neighborhood. Water and corrosion were discovered at the main electrical panel by the home inspection and needed replacement as a condition of sale. The water was coming through the older main service cable and a replacement of the complete service was recommended to resolve the issue. The installation was not a typical one as the plumbing and heater ducts were within the working clearance of the existing panel. The images show the relocated panel and extended circuitry to comply with electrical panel clearance codes. The exterior also presented challenges as well due to minimal clearance and the HVAC unit in the path of the new installation. The images show the relocated meter on the exterior to allow for proper clearance. For all of your electrical needs contact your licensed Philadelphia electrician Lauterborn Electric. Older Churches are some of the toughest places to do work. Over the years churches generally have handy members do work that should be done by professionals. As a result we run into situations like this one around the St. Joe’s area. The main electrical service was dated and undersized. The main panel was very overextended. Upgrading the service was the first step in fixing the electric in the church. So a new service drop was installed and a new panel and meter socket was installed inside. A wall was built to secure the new panel and meter socket. Internal wiring will need to be replaced in the near future. The pictures show the old panel and the new service drop. Lauterborn Electric was called by new homeowners in the South Philly section of the city of Philadelphia who found us on Yelp. They were looking for an estimate to run cable lines inside the walls. They also wanted a flat screen television installed on a solid brick wall in the living room. When we got to the property to provide an estimate, we did a walk through and initially, nothing looked out of the ordinary. The house appeared to be rewired and recessed lights were installed on the first floor to give it a nicer look. We told the home owner that we may take down a couple recessed lights to give access for the cable lines to be run to the second floor. We sent them an estimate and the job was ‘a go’. The work was to be done before the home owners moved into their new property. The day we arrived at the property, we began pulling down recessed lights and found that someone had run newer (Romex) wire to the recessed lights but tied them in to the original outdated knob and tube circuits. The newer lines in the finished basement were simply spliced in the ceiling with knob and tube. We opened the switches upstairs and knob and tube was present everywhere. The newly finished bathroom also revealed what had happened. Someone came into this property and wanted to make it look like it had been rewired when it was not. This is not the first time we had walked into something like this but it was definitely the worst. The images show what was found in the ceilings. A full rewire was recommended and completed before they moved in. The customer had a home inspection done but the inspection report did not disclose the full extent of the knob and tube wiring. We at Lauterborn Electric often run into ever extended and cluttered main electrical panels. The images show a cluttered 200 AMP panel and a properly sized panel installed by Lauterborn Electric. Many unqualified electricians keep packing circuitry into an already maxed out panel causing the potential for overheating and failure of the main electrical panel. Panels are rated for a certain amount of circuitry clearly stated on their panel boards. Exceeding the manufacturers’ specifications can lead to electrical issues that can lead to power failure or even fires. Although it is an expense to replace an undersized panel with a larger one, the safety of your home and family is worth it. Santa Claus must have had a sleigh full of televisions this Christmas as we have been busy making installations since then. The images show the before and after of a typical Lauterborn Electric installed television, but not all installations are the same. When mounting a flat screen television on a wall there are questions that need to be answered before a job can be priced and started.

-Is the wall where the television is to be mounted solid or hollow?

-How close to the installation can we extend power to feed the television?

-Where is the cable connection and box located?

-Is the HDMI cable concealed rated for such use?

For solid walls we have the option of notching the walls or installing a channel to conceal the wiring. If notching is necessary the walls would need to be patched over to conceal piping used to sleeve the cables for protection.
